HX Expeditions Unveils Ambitious Sustainability Roadmap for the Future of Responsible Travel

HX Expeditions
Leading the Way in Sustainable Expedition Cruising

HX Expeditions, the world's longest-running expedition cruise company, has released its 2025 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report, highlighting significant progress in sustainability while unveiling an ambitious new Sustainability Roadmap extending through to 2030.

The report represents an important milestone not only for HX Expeditions but also for the wider expedition cruise industry. Developed in line with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), the report demonstrates a commitment to transparency, accountability and measurable environmental and social outcomes.

As travellers increasingly seek meaningful and responsible travel experiences, HX Expeditions continues to position itself as a leader in sustainable exploration across some of the world's most remote and fragile destinations.

Significant Environmental Progress in 2025

Among the report's most notable achievements is a 12 per cent reduction in direct carbon dioxide emissions, bringing total emissions down to 64,630 metric tonnes during the reporting period.

The company also achieved a 50 per cent reduction in sulphur oxide emissions and a 14 per cent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions, contributing to cleaner air and reduced environmental impact across its operations.

HX Expeditions has continued to invest in innovative technologies, including the introduction of a fully electric "silent science boat" designed to support low-impact exploration and scientific research. The company has also expanded its slow-cruising itineraries, reducing fuel consumption while enhancing the guest experience and helping to manage visitor flows in sensitive destinations.

Science Remains at the Heart of Every Voyage

HX Expeditions
Scientific discovery has always been central to the HX Expeditions experience, and the latest report highlights the company's ongoing support for researchers working in some of the planet's most inaccessible regions.

During 2025, HX provided 1,652 complimentary cabin nights to scientists and research institutions, representing more than €1.4 million in support. Guests also played an active role in scientific research, contributing a record 46,466 citizen science observations through projects such as eBird and Happywhale.

Looking ahead, HX has announced plans to increase scientist cabin capacity by 30 per cent from 2027, reaching 3,900 complimentary cabin nights as part of its new 2030 sustainability targets.

A standout scientific achievement occurred during the 2025-26 Antarctic season when researchers documented a rare Antarctic blackfin icefish spawning event near Danco Island, a behaviour never previously recorded in the area.

Protecting Oceans and Supporting Conservation

HX Expeditions
Beyond reducing emissions, HX Expeditions continues to invest in practical conservation initiatives that deliver measurable environmental benefits.

Through its partnership with Ocean Bottle, the company helped remove 1,200 tonnes of ocean plastic from waterways and marine environments. Advanced ocean monitoring technology has also been deployed across voyages to collect valuable data on water quality, biodiversity, microplastics and carbon dioxide levels.

Additional initiatives include reducing food waste by seven per cent per guest night, significantly lowering water consumption, and introducing vegan and plastic-free products aboard selected vessels.

Importantly, HX reported zero environmental spills across all operations during 2025.

Creating Positive Impact for Local Communities

Sustainability extends beyond environmental responsibility and includes meaningful support for local communities.

Through the HX Foundation, more than €226,000 was distributed to 28 projects around the world, while guests contributed an additional €215,000 through onboard fundraising efforts.

The company also increased female representation in senior leadership roles to 45 per cent and expanded local sourcing partnerships, helping strengthen regional economies in destinations visited by its expedition fleet.

From supporting Arctic research projects in Svalbard to community-led tourism initiatives in Alaska and local cultural experiences in Greenland, HX continues to demonstrate how tourism can create lasting benefits for host communities.

A Vision for Exploration Through 2030

HX Expeditions
As HX Expeditions celebrates 130 years of exploration, its new Sustainability Roadmap provides a clear blueprint for the future. The strategy introduces measurable SMART goals focused on reducing environmental impacts, expanding scientific research opportunities, supporting conservation efforts and strengthening community partnerships.

The company has also received significant industry recognition in 2025, including the Wave Award for Best Sustainability Initiative and three Gold Magellan Awards recognising excellence in eco-friendly cruising, expedition itineraries and educational programs.

For travellers seeking extraordinary journeys to destinations such as Antarctica, Greenland, Alaska, Svalbard and the Northwest Passage, HX Expeditions is demonstrating that adventure travel can be both enriching and environmentally responsible.
