Sydney Builds Global Excitement for Mardi Gras 2028
From 25 July to 8 August 2026, representatives from Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras will participate in a series of high-profile events during WorldPride Amsterdam, reconnecting with Pride organisations from across the globe following Sydney's successful hosting of WorldPride in 2023.
The international delegation will march in the WorldPride March, participate in Amsterdam's famous Canal Parade, host a promotional stand at the Rainbow Markets in Pride Park and present the remarkable story of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras during the prestigious Human Rights Conference.
The visit marks the first major international engagement by the Festival since Sydney welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world during WorldPride 2023.
A Proud History That Inspires the World
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has evolved from the courageous first march by the original 78ers in 1978 into one of Australia's biggest annual celebrations of diversity, equality and inclusion.
Today, the Festival attracts visitors from every continent who travel to Sydney to experience the spectacular Mardi Gras Parade, cultural events, community celebrations, live performances, art exhibitions and vibrant nightlife.
As preparations begin for the Festival's golden anniversary in 2028, organisers are inviting international travellers to once again experience the unique atmosphere that has made Sydney a global Pride destination.

Festival leaders will meet with Pride organisations from around the world to exchange ideas, discuss common challenges and explore opportunities for collaboration. International cooperation also helps strengthen advocacy for equality, human rights and inclusion, ensuring Pride festivals continue making a positive impact well beyond their annual celebrations.
Major WorldPride Amsterdam Events
The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras delegation will participate in several key events throughout the festival:
Pride March and Rainbow Markets – 25 July
The delegation will marshal at Dam Square before joining the annual Pride Walk, which officially opens WorldPride Amsterdam. They will also host a Mardi Gras information stand at the Rainbow Markets in Vondel Park, where approximately 15,000 participants are expected to take part in the opening celebrations.
Canal Parade – 1 August
One of the highlights of WorldPride Amsterdam is the internationally renowned Canal Parade. Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras will join Pride organisations from around the world aboard the InterPride Boat, celebrating diversity along Amsterdam's historic waterways.
Human Rights Conference – 6 August
Festival representatives will present the inspiring story of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras during the Human Rights Conference, highlighting fifty years of Pride history, community achievements and the Festival's ongoing contribution to the global LGBTQIA+SB movement.
WorldPride March and Closing Ceremony – 8 August
The international visit concludes with participation in the WorldPride March and Closing Ceremony, marking the end of Amsterdam's celebrations while shifting global attention towards Sydney's milestone 50th anniversary in 2028.
