Famous for its breathtaking limestone karst mountains, crystal-clear waters and picturesque countryside, the Lijiang River has long been one of China's most iconic travel destinations. The adoption of electric-powered rafts now ensures that visitors can enjoy this extraordinary landscape with minimal environmental impact.
A Quieter Journey Through One of China's Most Beautiful Landscapes
Visitors cruising along the Xingping section of the Lijiang River are now greeted by the gentle sound of water instead of the loud engines that once echoed through the valley.
The transition from traditional gasoline-powered rafts to electric vessels has dramatically reduced noise pollution, transforming the sightseeing experience into a far more peaceful journey through one of Asia's most photographed river landscapes.
According to experienced raft operator Mo Jianbin, who has worked on the river for more than 14 years, the difference is remarkable. Noise levels have been reduced from approximately 120 decibels to around 60 decibels, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the natural beauty and tranquillity of the surrounding environment.
The elimination of engine fumes and fuel leaks has also significantly improved the health of the river ecosystem.

Over recent years, Guilin has invested approximately 15 billion yuan in ecological protection and environmental restoration projects throughout the region. These investments have helped preserve the river's outstanding natural beauty while ensuring tourism continues to thrive responsibly.
The city's commitment to conservation has delivered impressive results, with the Lijiang River maintaining excellent ecological conditions for four consecutive years. Its surface water quality consistently ranks among the highest in China, reinforcing Guilin's reputation as a world-class nature destination.
Improving the Visitor Experience
Electric sightseeing rafts offer far more than environmental benefits.
Modern electric propulsion provides smoother operation, making every cruise more relaxing and enjoyable. The absence of engine vibration and exhaust allows visitors to immerse themselves in the stunning scenery, hear birdsong and appreciate the peaceful atmosphere that defines the Lijiang River.
The upgraded vessels also include practical operational improvements. Unlike older gasoline-powered boats, the electric rafts feature reverse gear, making docking simpler and navigation through busy sections of the river safer and more efficient.
These improvements contribute to a higher-quality visitor experience while enhancing safety for operators and passengers alike.
Economic Benefits for Local Communities

For local raft operators, the shift to electric vessels has reduced operating costs considerably. Previously, fuel expenses could reach up to 1.5 yuan per kilometre. With electricity now supplied by the scenic area management, operators are benefiting from lower costs while welcoming increasing numbers of visitors.
The growing popularity of the quieter, cleaner sightseeing experience has led to a significant rise in tourism income. Some operators have seen their annual earnings more than double, creating greater financial security for local families who depend on tourism.
This demonstrates how environmentally responsible tourism can deliver lasting economic benefits alongside conservation.
A Modern Fleet Leading Green Tourism
The conversion to electric sightseeing vessels began in 2023 and was successfully completed in 2024.
Today, approximately 500 electric rafts operate from two major wharves in the Xingping Scenic Area, serving thousands of visitors exploring one of China's most famous river journeys.
Each sightseeing route covers approximately eight kilometres. Every raft is equipped with two batteries, with each battery providing enough power for nearly three complete trips before recharging. Dedicated charging facilities opposite Chaobanshan Wharf allow batteries to be fully recharged within two to three hours, ensuring efficient daily operations.
The project highlights how advances in clean technology are making sustainable tourism increasingly practical for major visitor destinations.
