Discover Aenza: Sydney's Exciting New Japanese Wine Bar Opens in Darlinghurst

Aenza Japanese Wine Bar

Sydney's vibrant dining scene welcomes an exciting new destination with the opening of Aenza in Darlinghurst on 24 July. Combining contemporary Japanese cuisine with one of the city's most impressive Japanese-focused wine programs, Aenza offers a sophisticated yet welcoming dining experience where exceptional food, curated wines and genuine hospitality come together.

Created by hospitality entrepreneur Joy Liu, Aenza is the much-anticipated second venue following the success of Amuro, the intimate saké bar tucked away in nearby Surry Hills. While Amuro quickly became known for its authentic Tokyo-inspired atmosphere, Aenza expands the concept with a larger venue, an extensive wine collection and an open kitchen designed to bring diners even closer to the culinary action.

A New Chapter for Japanese Dining in Sydney

Located within the stylish Oxford & Foley development on Oxford Street, Darlinghurst, Aenza represents the evolution of Joy Liu's hospitality vision.

After the popularity of Amuro demonstrated Sydneysiders' love of interactive dining experiences, Aenza provides the space to broaden that concept while preserving the close connection between chefs, service staff and guests.

The larger venue features an open kitchen where diners can watch every dish being prepared, chat with the chefs throughout the evening and enjoy an engaging dining experience rarely found in traditional restaurants.

This immersive atmosphere creates a sense of theatre that transforms dinner into an unforgettable social occasion.

Modern Japanese Cuisine with Australian Influences

The menu celebrates Japanese cooking techniques while embracing premium Australian ingredients and contemporary creativity.

Guests can begin with beautifully crafted small plates including umeshu tomato with miso cream cheese and white anchovy, paradise prawns paired with pickled chilli and shiso, crispy karaage chicken served with spiced salt and takana mayonnaise, and twice-cooked sweet and sour lamb ribs finished with fragrant sobacha.

For those looking for heartier dishes, standout mains include premium MB9+ Kiwama Wagyu accompanied by daikon and fresh wasabi, alongside charred cauliflower enhanced with brown butter and Comté cheese.

Dessert lovers will appreciate the innovative sweet offerings, including a light chiffon cake roll featuring miso caramel and candied walnuts, while the luxurious black truffle Basque cheesecake provides a memorable finish to the meal.

One of Sydney's Most Impressive Japanese Wine Collections

Aenza distinguishes itself from many Japanese restaurants through its remarkable wine-led beverage program.

Restaurant and Beverage Manager Paul Beaton, formerly of Tetsuya's and Quay Restaurant, has curated an exceptional collection of approximately 120 wines sourced primarily from Japan, France and Australia.

With more than 38 wines available by the glass, guests have the opportunity to explore a diverse range of premium varietals without committing to an entire bottle.

The drinks program also showcases Japan's celebrated spirits, including Japanese whisky, gin, shochu, umeshu and premium Japanese liqueurs. A rotating weekly saké selection encourages regular visitors to discover new flavours throughout the year.

Creative highball cocktails, including White Peach Calpis, Japanese Americano and Toki Whisky Yuzu, add further excitement to the beverage menu.

Beautiful Design Inspired by Japanese Simplicity

Designed by Like Minds Studio, Aenza successfully blends the heritage character of its Oxford Street location with understated Japanese aesthetics.

The 50-seat restaurant retains the building's original rendered walls, natural patina and ornate ceilings while introducing contemporary finishes including textured granite, handcrafted timber furniture and a striking sandblasted steel canopy.

At the heart of the venue sits an impressive nine-metre American walnut bar accommodating 23 guests, making it one of Sydney's standout destinations for wine lovers seeking an interactive dining experience.

Natural materials and subtle design elements reflect the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, celebrating simplicity, authenticity and timeless beauty.
