Record Growth in Australian Visitors to Nagano

Japan’s spectacular Nagano region is experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity among Australian travellers, with visitor numbers reaching new record levels. Known for its dramatic alpine landscapes, world-class ski resorts, historic temples and rejuvenating hot springs, Nagano has become one of Japan’s most sought-after destinations for nature lovers and adventure seekers.

According to the latest report from the Japanese Tourism Agency, Australians accounted for a significant increase in overnight stays across the prefecture. The figures reveal a 7.4 percent rise compared with the same period in 2024, highlighting the growing enthusiasm among Australians for exploring Japan’s mountainous heartland.

From January to the end of November, more than 163,000 overnight stays were recorded by Australian visitors. This represents an increase of 28,020 nights compared with the previous year. Tourism experts expect the final figures to climb even higher once the busy December ski season is included.

Beyond the Ski Slopes: Australians Discover More of Nagano

Nagano has long been famous for its exceptional winter sports, drawing skiers and snowboarders from around the world. However, the region’s appeal is expanding beyond the snowfields as more Australians discover the diverse landscapes and experiences available year-round.

Helen Wong, Australian representative for the Nagano Tourism Organization, said that while winter remains incredibly popular, travellers are increasingly exploring other parts of the prefecture during spring, summer and autumn.

Interest has particularly grown in the southern regions of Suwa and Southern Nagano, areas celebrated for their scenic alpine views, tranquil lakes and spectacular seasonal landscapes. During spring these regions burst into colour with cherry blossoms, while summer and autumn bring wildflowers and crisp mountain air that attracts hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Southern Nagano’s Ina Valley: A Hidden Alpine Gem

Nestled between the towering Japanese Alps, the Ina Valley in Southern Nagano is rapidly gaining attention among international travellers seeking authentic nature experiences in Japan.

This picturesque valley offers dramatic mountain scenery, traditional rural landscapes and access to some of the region’s most impressive natural attractions. One of the most famous is Takato Castle Park, widely regarded as one of Japan’s most beautiful cherry blossom viewing locations. Each spring the park transforms into a breathtaking sea of pink blossoms that draws visitors from across the country.

Another highlight of the region is Senjojiki Cirque, a stunning glacial basin located at an elevation of around 2,600 metres. Formed more than 20,000 years ago by powerful glacial movements, the cirque is easily accessible by cable car and offers spectacular views of the surrounding peaks of the Central Alps. During warmer months the alpine landscape is filled with colourful wildflowers, making it a favourite destination for hikers and photographers.

Lake Suwa: Nagano’s Scenic Natural Wonder

Lake Suwa, the largest lake in Nagano Prefecture, is another spectacular destination gaining attention among Australian travellers. Surrounded by mountains including the Yatsugatake range, the lake offers beautiful scenery throughout the year.

During spring and summer the surrounding foothills become a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers, while autumn paints the region with deep reds and golden hues. The lake area is also famous for its relaxing hot springs, traditional inns and seasonal festivals that showcase the region’s rich cultural heritage.

Iconic Attractions That Define Nagano

Nagano offers visitors an incredible blend of history, culture and natural beauty. The region is home to several iconic Japanese landmarks that continue to attract travellers from around the world.

Zenko-ji Temple, one of Japan’s most significant Buddhist temples, welcomes pilgrims and visitors seeking spiritual reflection and historical insight. Matsumoto Castle, often called the “Crow Castle” because of its striking black exterior, is one of Japan’s best-preserved feudal castles and a must-see attraction.

Nature lovers also flock to Jigokudani Monkey Park, where visitors can watch wild Japanese macaques relaxing in natural hot springs surrounded by snow during winter. This unique wildlife experience has become one of Nagano’s most photographed attractions.

Easy Access from Tokyo

One of the reasons Nagano has become increasingly popular with Australian visitors is its convenient location. The region lies approximately 250 kilometres northwest of Tokyo on Japan’s main island of Honshu.

Travelling to Nagano from Tokyo is fast and efficient thanks to Japan’s high-speed rail network. The journey by Shinkansen bullet train takes only around 90 minutes, allowing visitors to easily combine the alpine region with a broader Japan travel itinerary.

A Four-Season Destination for Australian Travellers

From world-famous ski slopes in winter to cherry blossoms in spring, alpine hiking in summer and spectacular foliage in autumn, Nagano offers year-round experiences that continue to attract growing numbers of international travellers.

For Australians seeking natural beauty, cultural heritage and outdoor adventure, Nagano is quickly emerging as one of Japan’s most compelling destinations.
