Tickle the Ivories: Parkes Welcomes a Street Piano for the Community

Street Piano
In the heart of Parkes, music and community come together in a delightful new way. Thanks to a generous donation from the Parkes Red Cross, an old honky tonk piano has been given a second life as a ‘Street Piano’ for everyone to enjoy. Positioned on Church Street during the Parkes Elvis Festival, this charming addition invites locals and visitors alike to share in spontaneous music, creativity and festival fun.

A Piano with History and Heart

This piano isn’t just any instrument—it’s a lovingly restored piece of Parkes history. Over the past three weeks, dedicated efforts have gone into revamping the piano, transforming it from a retired honky tonk into a vibrant street-ready centerpiece. With playful artistry and attention to detail, the piano is now ready to entertain festival-goers with melodies both familiar and improvised.

The lettering on the piano, provided by the talented team at Sew & Go in Parkes, adds a whimsical touch, perfectly complementing its quirky, community-minded charm.

A Musical Hub on Church Street

During the Parkes Elvis Festival, the piano will be placed on the footpath outside the Red Cross rooms, inviting passers-by to sit down and play. It’s an open invitation for anyone to share in music, whether as an impromptu performer, a curious listener, or a family looking for a fun photo opportunity.

The Red Cross rooms remain open throughout the festival as a welcoming retreat space, offering water, cordial, tables and chairs, toilets and a baby change room for visitors. It’s also home to a display by the Parkes Shire Concert Band, adding to the festive atmosphere and local cultural connection.

Community Spirit and Creativity in Action

Street Piano
The Street Piano embodies the spirit of Parkes: generous, artistic, and inclusive. It encourages creativity, interaction and celebration, reminding everyone that music belongs to the community and that even an old piano can find a new, joyful purpose.

Whether you’re a seasoned pianist, a festival-goer, or just strolling down Church Street, the piano offers a moment of delight and connection. It’s a tangible example of how art, music, and community spirit can transform everyday spaces into memorable experiences.
