Tropfest 2026 Returns: Australia’s Premier Short Film Festival Lights Up Centennial Park

Tropfest
Where Emerging Filmmakers Meet Global Audiences

After a six-year hiatus, Tropfest is back on Sunday, 22 February 2026, at Sydney’s iconic Centennial Park. Known as the world’s largest short film festival, Tropfest has been launching careers and discovering hidden talent for over 30 years. This festival is where bold stories meet big audiences, giving emerging filmmakers the platform to tell their stories in front of tens of thousands of live attendees and hundreds of thousands more online via the global YouTube livestream.

A Platform for Creativity, Diversity, and Innovation

Tropfest 2026 promises a new era of creativity and inclusivity. Filmmakers from across Australia and around the world are invited to compete, showcasing their ability to craft powerful narratives in short form. With prizes totalling $100,000 through the CommBank-Tropfest Emerging Filmmakers Fund, winners will be empowered to invest in their next projects and career development. First prize is $50,000, second prize $30,000, and third prize $20,000. Additional prizes, including a special Google tech bundle, will also be awarded.

The Tropfest Signature Item: “Hourglass”

Every Tropfest entry must feature the Tropfest Signature Item (TSI), a tradition that challenges filmmakers to integrate a specific object into their story. For 2026, the TSI is the “Hourglass,” symbolising time, creativity, and the magic that can unfold in just a few minutes. Whether used literally or metaphorically, the hourglass is a reminder that every second matters, both on screen and in the creative process.

Workshops, Masterclasses, and Filmmaker Development

In partnership with YouTube, Tropfest is introducing two new initiatives to further support emerging talent. The YouTube Creator Collective x Tropfest, launching in October 2025, offers digital skilling and development programs for aspiring filmmakers. Leading up to the festival in February 2026, Tropfest will host workshops, masterclasses, and talks covering writing, production design, AI in filmmaking, and other essential creative skills.

Experience the Festival in the Heart of Sydney

Centennial Park provides the perfect backdrop for Tropfest, combining lush greenery with expansive outdoor stages. Attendees can enjoy a full day of screenings, live performances, interactive discussions, and networking opportunities with industry professionals. The festival’s outdoor nighttime concert features dazzling stage lighting and a vibrant atmosphere, bringing the city skyline to life as the sun sets.

Why Tropfest Matters

Tropfest
Tropfest is more than a film festival; it is a career-launching platform, a celebration of storytelling, and a cultural institution that has shaped Australian cinema for decades. It is a rare opportunity to see the next generation of filmmakers before they become household names, making it a must-visit event for cinephiles and creatives alike.
