Maldives Makes History as the First Country to Introduce a Generational Tobacco Ban

From 1 November 2025, it is now illegal to sell, purchase, or use tobacco products for anyone born on or after 1 January 2007. This groundbreaking amendment to the Tobacco Control Act is designed to create a tobacco-free generation and significantly reduce long-term health issues associated with smoking.

The new law applies to all tobacco products and requires retailers to verify age before completing any sale. This ensures that young citizens born from 2007 onward will never legally be able to buy or consume tobacco in the Maldives.
