The Buddha’s body is concealed by a hill with only its head peeking out from the top, earning it the nickname ‘Atama Daibutsu’ (The Buddha’s head). Designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando, it was completed in 2016 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Makomanai Takino Cemetery and has captivated tourists from around the globe since.
Take the Namboku Line from Sapporo Station and alight at Makomanai Station. The local bus will transport you to the cemetery (Takino Reien), which takes about 20 minutes.
