Horseback Riding in Iceland´s famous Rift Valley

A 5 day tour on horseback to explore the captivating landscape in and around famous Thingvellir National Park.

If you are an experienced rider and are looking for a fascinating destination why not come to Iceland, the Viking country of Fire and Ice? The small island in the North Atlantic is only a few hours flight away from the US and has recently become a popular destination for the adventurous traveler.

Exploring Iceland offers a 5 day tour on horseback to explore the captivating landscape in and around famous Thingvellir National Park. This tour takes you straight into the breathtaking Rift Valley in South Iceland. The Icelandic Horse is the only breed in Iceland and has become very popular as a riding horse in Europe and North America because of its friendly character and super soft special gait tölt, a fast yet comfortable gait not very much different from the Rack gait of the American Saddlebred. This gait is fixed in the horses´ genes and it is easy to learn for the rider.

While riding on secluded lava and birch lined trails in between the North American and Eurasian continental plates you will get a magnificent insight into the fascinating geology and history of Iceland. Imagine tölting on the gentle beautiful horses through lava fields, over highland plateaus with breathtaking mountain views and along lovely lake shores as you will discover the wonderful natural wonders of South Iceland. As part of this guided tour you will explore the ancient parliamentary (Thing) place which is the birthplace of the Icelandic Nation. Also included are visits to the erupting Geysir hot spring, the famous Golden Waterfall Gullfoss and to the geothermal Fontana SPA, where guests can sweat in the steam of a natural hot spring and jump right afterwards into Lake Laugarvatn to cool off.

For accommodation you will have the choice between lovely 4* Hotel Grímsborgir with spacious superior double rooms and a first class Restaurant and cozy 3* Country Lodge Hotel Borealis. Both hotels offer geothermal hot tubs to relax in after a long and exciting day in the saddle. The groups are small with six guests only and the welcoming Icelandic hosts make sure that every guest is treated like a king.

Riders have the possibility of trying out a number of different horses during the ride. Transfer back and forth from Reykjavík, the Icelandic capital is included and Exploring Iceland is happy to arrange accommodation before and after the tour, airport transport and any further explorations of Iceland at your convenience. Special diets can be accommodates, such as Vegan and Vegetarian. Each departure can be booked as a private tour for your party and more departures on different dates may be available upon request. This ride can be combined with other tours to offer guests an even longer riding experience in two different areas and landscapes.
