100 reasons to celebrate in Griffith

The Riverina town of Griffith turns 100 in 2016 with an exciting schedule of centenary celebrations making it a wonderful time to visit. The highlight event is theInternational Sculpture Symposium from 2-18 May where seven master sculptors from China, Italy, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Australia will create unique stone sculptures from three-tonne blocks of granite, which will eventually become a permanent fixture on the picturesque Centenary Walk.

Head to Griffith Pioneer Park and watch the master sculptors in action as they saw, cut and carve their creations from massive blocks of stone. Each artist will offer a unique style and personality to their work based on their interpretation of the theme: ‘The meaning of water in Griffith and the city’s multicultural diversity.’Plus, book in for an art masterclass in Wood Carving, Portraiture or Drawing as part of the Centenary Arts Festival.

Learn all about the history of Griffith at the Pioneer Park Museum, which features original buildings, machinery, vehicles, antiques and even churches among the interesting collections. The Wine Building provides an educational glimpse into the regions rich wine making history with the Italian Museum housing an incredible collextion of artefacts from the earliest Italian settlers.

The Riverina is often referred to as the food bowl of Australia, with Griffith offering a multitude of food experiences. Visit Catania Fruit Salad Farm and learn about the original fruit blocks established in the area; Yarrow Park Cellar Door to taste and explore the range of olive oil varietals; Riverina Grove for coffee and to sample their range of gourmet products; and Bertoldo's Pasticceria Panetteria for Italian treats including handmade nougat, gelato, cannoli and biscotti.

Many wineries in the Griffith region started producing wine more than 100 years ago. Visit the cellar doors at McWilliams Wines Hanwood Estate, De Bortoli Wines,Calabria Family Wines, Yarran Wines and Warburn Estate.

Enjoy an open-air safari tour at Altina Wildlife Park to see parrots, emus, kangaroos and goannas as well as lions, antelope, giraffes and zebras and be sure to visit the white lion pups. Take a Behind the Scenes tour for a unique Wild Encounter and feed the animals for a thrilling and unforgettable experience.

For breathtaking district views head to Hermit's Caves and Lookout. Once home to jilted Broken Hill miner Valerio Ricetti who lived here for more than 20-years, it is now a unique and rare cultural landscape documenting Ricetti’s resourcefulness and skill. Follow the self-guided Hermit’s Cave Heritage Trail which includes Richetti’s Garden, ‘Gun Post’, Main Cave and Chapel.

Did you know the Riverina grows enough cotton to produce 93 million pairs of jeans every year? Take a tour of Southern Cotton Gin and learn all about the huge local cotton industry. View the entire process from when the bales are brought in, cleaned and packed ready for shipping from specially-built observation walkways.

Take the 30-minute drive to nearby Cocoparra National Park which is renowned for its dramatic scenic views, bushwalking, bird watching and ancient Aboriginal sites. The Park is home to an important bird migration corridor and is a haven for glossy-black cockatoos, hooded robins, speckled warblers, nesting peregrine falcons and more.
