One of the world’s oldest professional surfing events, Newcastle’s
Surfest, will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2015. Part of the
Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series,
Surfest includes two hotly contested marquee events.
The 6-Star rated Burton Toyota Pro attracts some of the world’s best
male surfers with past competitors including Australian greats Taj
Burrow and Joel Parkinson, while the Women’s Classic has previously seen
current world number two Sally Fitzgibbons, and reigning World Champion
Carissa Moore surf at Newcastle.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer Sandra Chipchase said,
“Newcastle is a stunning coastal city with spectacular beaches ideal for
surfing, a vibrant cultural scene, great cafes and restaurants, and a
friendly, relaxed atmosphere.”
“The city’s close proximity to Sydney and accessibility by air make it a
perfect location for an international sporting event like Surfest, and I
encourage everyone visiting the event next year to take the time to
enjoy everything Newcastle and the Hunter region has to offer.”
