The Honourable Louise Asher, Victorian Minister for Tourism and Major Events presented Ambassadors with their awards and congratulated them on their significant achievements over the past year.
“Club Melbourne has become a very influential voice for Melbourne internationally with its Ambassadors using their contacts and industry knowledge to bring world class business events to Victoria,” Minister Asher said.
Minister Asher also announced Club Melbourne’s first Special Contribution Award recipient Professor Philip Batterham for his outstanding role in mentoring the student organisers of WorldMun 2013.
MCEC’s Chief Executive Peter King said: “We are incredibly proud to have this unique group of Melburnians who work alongside our team and partners to lead and help deliver some of the largest and most prestigious conferences in the world.
“Through their expertise and hard work, they attract world leaders in their fields to Melbourne to build networks, provide education and research opportunities and showcase our city’s knowledge on a global scale.”
Peter King acknowledged the significant milestone achieved by the Program in February, officially leading 81 international conferences and contributing more than $500 million in economic impact to the state of Victoria since its inception.
The Melbourne Convention Bureau’s Chief Executive Officer, Karen Bolinger said: “Melbourne is currently experiencing its most successful two years on record in terms of international association conferences held which many of our Club Melbourne Ambassadors have significantly contributed to.
“It is a major competitive advantage for us to be able to capitalise on our leadership position in the global knowledge sector and to leverage the Club Melbourne Ambassador Program to bring these events to the state.”
The 15 international conferences secured by Ambassadors over the past year cover a broad range of fields including engineering, education, biotechnology, medicine and science and will be held in Melbourne over the next seven years.
MCEC will host some of the world’s most esteemed conferences this year including the World Congress of Cardiology this weekend 4 – 7 May, International AIDS Conference, International Association of Plant Biotechnology Congress, International Conference on Systems Biology and the World Cancer Congress.
Since 2005, Club Melbourne has secured the support of 131 Ambassadors and become a platform for Melbourne’s elite from a diverse range of fields who contribute to Victoria’s economic growth and international reputation.
Club Melbourne is owned and led by MCEC with support and collaboration from the Melbourne Convention Bureau and Victorian State Government.
