People Flocking to Merriwa Festival of Fleeces 2012


Merriwa Festival of Fleeces
The population Merriwa will be increased as people from all over the state of NSW flock to the town to enjoy the Festival of Fleeces. The Festival of the Fleeces is a celebration of the regions historic association with the Australian Wool Industry. This event is a fun filled family day out that raises money for Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Merriwa VRA. Festival events will be held Friday night 8th June and all day Saturday 9th June in the town centre of Merriwa.

The township of Merriwa is located in NSW, Australia, 82km from Muswellbrook, or 293 km from Sydney.

Features of the Festival include Running of the Sheep (where sheep run down Bettington Street, Merriwa’s main street, dressed in Red Socks) and the Festival Parade which commences at 12 noon. With rides, Art Show, games, team penning, Quilting display, dog high jumps, whip cracking, clowns, stalls there is something for everyone. Plus a whole lot more to keep the family entertained.

There will be demonstrations of sheep shearing, where people can watch the old-time blade shearer as he shows his skills taking the fleece, through to today’s shearer with his motor run blades.

The Art Competition is open for all to enter, with prizes for traditional painting, water colour painting, miniature painting, print making section, drawing, The Photography Competition has sections for Colour, Black and White, and Novice.

The Festival of Fleeces concludes with KaBoom letting their fireworks off at 6.15pm at the Show Ground and a Team Penning competition at 6.45pm.
