Xiamen an Ideal Destination for Travelers

Hakka House Xiamen
Hainan Airlines has introduced Xiamen as a destination city on Facebook and talked about the enormous centuries-old earthen dwellings that can be reached and explored from there.

Xiamen is a picturesque coastal city in Fujian province, China. Xiamen has a huge diversity of cultural and natural resources – making it a destination that suits all types of holidays. Xiamen has  lot to offer. You can experience the colorful diversity of the local ethnic minorities or relax and recuperate on local picturesque coastlines and islands. For history buffs,  you can admire architectural beauty ranging from that left behind by past European colonialists to that of the centuries-old gargantuan earthen structures still occupied by locals.

Indeed, travelers come to Xiamen for many different reasons. However, the most prominent and popular reason for a trip to Xiamen is most certainly to see Hakka House - a UNESCO Word Heritage Site which can be reached via train or bus from Xiamen.

Hakka House is actually a cluster ‘houses’ in the form of enormous circular earthen-dwellings which were built by the local Hakka ethnic minority anything from five to ten centuries ago. These obscurely shaped structures reach up to 17 meters high and have diameters of up to 108 meters and are so enormous that spy satellites once had them mistaken for missile silos during the Cold War!

Aesthetically, the inside of the Hakka House structures are as equally impressive as the outside. Whole clans live within Hakka Houses and live much the same way as they did centuries ago within these structures. A venture into the centre of a Hakka House is really a venture into a whole different world and feels as if one is stepping back into a bygone society. The central feature of these part ancient apartment building part fortress structures is usually a huge circular open-aired area that is used for communal cooking, dancing and entertainment. For only a small fee, outsiders are welcomed to spend the night within these communities and experience local lifestyle.

Along with other travel destinations in China, Hainan Airlines has recently introduced Xiamen on their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/HainanAirlinesGlobal
