The Sydney International Boat Show 2024

The Sydney International Boat Show
The Sydney International Boat Show opened today and will be open to the public until Sunday.

I went along today and saw the many exhibits inside the International Convention Centre Sydney & Cockle Bay Marina.

Of course if you have a boat, thinking about buying a boat, or just interested in boating the Show is well worthwhile seeing. I do not own a boat, but still found it fascinating to see what was on display in the halls and on the water.

The Sydney International Boat Show
Boats of all shapes and sizes were on display, from the low cost to what I would say are expensive. I saw one on display that you could grab at the bargain price of $6.5 million. Some were sleek, some chunky, some very modern looking and some old fashioned. Some were made of fibreglass, rubber, and wood. They all looked impressive, and you could walk on board for your brief opportunity of experiencing luxury boating (as long as you take your shoes off).

The Sydney International Boat Show
It was not just boats on display. To arrange the money to buy your dream boat the finance companies there would come in handy. Once you bought you boat you would need insurance, and if your backyard pool was not big enough for your boat you would need marina space. Then you would need to buy all the accessories such as clothing, sunglasses and life jackets

Less costly items were on display too, such as canoes, jet skies and wakeboards.

What intrigued me was the stand that were selling boats that looked like cars, and the stand that sold the small wooden boat.

The Sydney International Boat Show
The stands are staffed by knowledgeable people, so do not be afraid to ask questions, even if they sound silly. The staff will love sharing their boating knowledge with you.

IHG Hotels & Resorts expands Sydney premium estate with two Crowne Plaza rebrands

IHG Hotels & Resorts will expand its Sydney premium estate with the addition of two Crowne Plaza hotels, following a strategic portfolio agreement with Frank and Wade Huang of Star Millennium Pty Ltd that will see the rebranding of two well-loved hotels at Sydney Airport and Macquarie Park.

The 196-room Crowne Plaza Macquarie Park is set to open in early 2025, transitioning from the Courtyard by Marriott to the Crowne Plaza brand. This rebranding will include a comprehensive refurbishment of the lobby and guest rooms, enhancing the overall guest experience.

Located approximately 25 minutes northwest of Sydney CBD, Macquarie Park is one of Australia's premier business districts. The hotel's prime location will attract significant demand from nearby businesses, including Macquarie University, Macquarie University Hospital, and Macquarie Shopping Centre, as well as the Australian headquarters of several leading pharmaceutical and technology companies.

Meanwhile, Holiday Inn Sydney Airport will be rebranded as Crowne Plaza Sydney Airport in September 2024. The hotel guest rooms, which underwent a $15 million refurbishment in 2022, are already at a Crowne Plaza standard and the hotel will now see updates to its lobby and restaurant to complete its transition into the premium segment.

With 252 rooms, the Crowne Plaza Sydney Airport is already a favourite among business and leisure travellers, consistently delivering exceptional performance for both the owners and IHG. Elevating the hotel from the midscale to the premium segment will further solidify its reputation as one of Sydney Airport's top hotels.

The hotels will move to franchise, with Star Millennium appointing Trilogy Hotels to operate both hotels.

Cameron Burke, Director of Development at IHG Hotels & Resorts, commented: “We are honoured to have been chosen by Star Millennium as the partner to brand these two well-known Sydney hotels. It's exciting to see the Crowne Plaza brand continue to go from strength to strength, building on its reputation as one of the world's best known and loved premium hotel brands among corporate and leisure travellers alike. We look forward to further strengthening our wonderful partnership with Frank and Wade in the coming years.”

Wade Huang, Director of Star Millennium Pty Ltd, added: “We are proud of our long-standing and successful relationship with IHG. Expanding our collaboration by integrating our Sydney Airport and Macquarie Park hotels into the Crowne Plaza family is an exciting step. Crowne Plaza Macquarie Park will set a new standard for quality in the Macquarie Park business precinct, and Crowne Plaza Sydney Airport will enhance its legacy as a Holiday Inn by delivering a premium guest experience.”

Scott Boyes, CEO, Trilogy Hotels, commented: “Trilogy Hotels is delighted to be appointed by Frank and Wade Huang of Star Millennium as the independent hotel managers of both assets, running the day-to-day operations and spearheading both of their rebranding and refurbishment journeys. Together, with our wonderful partners the Huang Family, and IHG Hotels & Resorts, we are committed to creating an amazing hotel experience for our owners, teams and guests. As we grow our independent hotel management portfolio in Australia, we are beyond grateful to Frank and Wade for putting their trust in us to operate their beloved hotels. We look forward to driving the operational and bottom-line profit performance of both assets and providing our expertise in systems, training, and team development.”

IHG currently has 97 open or pipeline hotels in Australasia & the Pacific, including 22 Crowne Plaza properties. In the next twelve months, IHG plans to open new Crowne Plaza locations in Mawson Lakes (South Australia), Melbourne Carlton (Victoria), and Shell Cove Marina (New South Wales), with a new property in Geelong (Victoria) slated for 2026.

Coffee-themed tours brewing interest in southwest China

Villagers pick fresh coffee fruits, Yunnan Province, /CFP
Strings of red coffee fruit are drawing crowds of tourists to Pu'er, a renowned tea producing area which now is making a name for itself as China's coffee capital.

In Dakaihe Village of Simao District, Pu'er, curious sightseers are posing for photos in front of a conspicuous coffee-colored "Moon Meditation House." The house, a work of art made from leftover ground coffee and other recycled items, is situated in a coffee garden and has become a popular place for visitors to rest, sip coffee and spend leisure time admiring drifting clouds, rolling mountains and evening stars.

Liu Ziyue, from southern Guangdong Province, stayed in the house for an entire afternoon. "It's wonderful to enjoy a cup of coffee from beans that are harvested and brewed right here," Liu said.

Even outside the peak tourism season, the coffee garden still receives more than 500 guests daily, noted Hua Runmei, who runs the coffee garden. Some of these guests are professional baristas and cafe owners who visit the venue to experience new fermentation methods used to produce coffee with distinct flavors.

Pu'er's terrain, altitude and climate make it a perfect place to grow coffee. Currently, over 95 percent of coffee in China is produced in Yunnan Province, with over 60 percent of Yunnan's coffee coming from Pu'er. In 2022, the coffee planting area in the city had totaled 45,267 hectares, and the output value surpassed 5 billion yuan (about 703 million U.S. dollars).

With the coffee industry in this region now attracting global attention, and given the fast-growing population of coffee consumers in China, local coffee manor owners have been steadily exploring innovative ways to boost coffee-related tourism.

In a farm run by Aini, a leading coffee company in Yunnan, 1,000 hectares of different varieties of coffee bushes grow vigorously, where visitors can view a production line to see for themselves how freeze-dried coffee is mass-produced. They can also pick coffee fruit and make a cup of Pu'er coffee by themselves.

Xia Mengjie, from Hunan Province, spent two whole days at this venue, learning about coffee culture and also making coffee in the process, thereby immersing himself in the magnificence of nature.

"Nature and modern industry blend so well here that it feels like time has slowed down," Xia said.

The popularity of coffee farm visits is powered by efforts made by authorities in Yunnan in recent years. Authorities in the province have worked hard to promote the integration of the coffee and tourism industries, launching a package of tailored coffee-themed tour routes and products.

Data from the Pu'er bureau of culture and tourism showed that during this year's New Year Day holiday, Pu'er had received 435,500 tourist visits while raking in tourism revenue of 309 million yuan, increases of around 35 percent and 38 percent year on year, respectively.

According to Zhang Qiying, deputy director of the bureau, coffee-related tourism activities, such as picking coffee beans, making coffee, and cupping, are developing into an attractive tourism package in Pu'er, favored by consumers opting for diversified and more personalized experiences.
