| The Marlborough Boutique Hotel and Vineyard |
Set among 16 acres of gardens and a working vineyard at Rapaura, near Blenheim, this intimate boutique hotel provides a tranquil escape surrounded by the landscapes and vineyards that have made Marlborough famous. The property combines a carefully restored historic building with contemporary guest accommodation and an onsite restaurant, creating an experience that is both elegant and distinctly connected to its location.
The Marlborough was also one of the featured exhibitors at MEETINGS 2026, representing the Marlborough region and showcasing its boutique accommodation and potential for business events, incentives, retreats and exclusive-use gatherings. The hotel was represented as part of the Marlborough Collective team at Stand 166.
For travellers looking for a luxury Marlborough hotel surrounded by vineyards, or business event organisers seeking somewhere distinctive for a retreat or incentive programme, The Marlborough offers an experience well beyond conventional hotel accommodation.
A Historic Convent Reimagined As A Boutique Hotel
One of the most fascinating aspects of The Marlborough is its history.
The main building began life as a convent designed by architect Thomas Turnbull and constructed in 1901 for the Sisters of Mercy. Originally located beside Saint Mary's Church in Blenheim, the building accommodated 19 nuns and included a library, music room, sewing room, office and chapel.
The building features native New Zealand timbers including Matai, Rimu and Kauri. One of its most striking heritage features is a substantial carved Kauri staircase, which remains a centrepiece of the building.
In 1994, the historic convent was moved in five pieces to its present location on Rapaura Road. Restoration followed under the guidance of architect Sir Michael Fowler.
After operating as Old St Mary's Convent Bed and Breakfast, the property was extensively refurbished before reopening in 2017 as The Marlborough Boutique Hotel and Vineyard, with ten luxury rooms.
The result is a rare combination of Victorian heritage and contemporary boutique accommodation.
Ten Rooms In A Peaceful Vineyard Setting
The Marlborough offers just ten contemporary rooms, creating an intimate atmosphere quite different from a large resort or conventional city hotel.
The rooms are located across two floors of the historic building, with Premium, Deluxe and Queen room categories available. The property describes its rooms as spacious and elegantly designed, with private ensuites and access to views across the surrounding gardens and vineyard.
The rooms have been designed to balance the character of the historic building with modern comfort.
For couples, the intimate scale of the hotel creates an appealing setting for a romantic escape. For families and groups, the property can also provide a relaxed environment away from the bustle of larger accommodation properties.
The Marlborough is additionally available for exclusive use, making it suitable for corporate retreats, special occasions, family gatherings, groups and small weddings.
Sixteen Acres Of Gardens And Vineyard

The Marlborough sits within 16 acres of park-like gardens and vineyard, providing guests with plenty of space to walk, relax and enjoy the surroundings.
The gardens contain more than 400 varieties of native and exotic trees and shrubs, with a spring-fed creek running through the estate and providing a habitat for birdlife.
The working vineyard produces several varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Merlot and Malbec, with wines available at Harvest Restaurant and in the hotel.
There is also an organic vegetable garden on the estate, with produce used by the hotel's restaurant.
This connection between garden, vineyard, kitchen and guest experience gives The Marlborough a genuine sense of place.
Harvest Restaurant Celebrates Marlborough Produce
Food and wine are central to the experience at The Marlborough.
Harvest Restaurant is the property's onsite restaurant, where seasonal produce from the region and wider New Zealand is incorporated into an a la carte menu.
The restaurant uses a Mibrasa charcoal oven, providing another dimension to its cooking and allowing the kitchen team to develop dishes around charcoal-fired flavours. The restaurant also promotes locally sourced ingredients and sustainability.
Dining at Harvest is therefore not simply a matter of convenience for hotel guests. It is part of the destination experience.
Marlborough is one of New Zealand's most celebrated wine regions, and enjoying regional food alongside local wines provides a natural connection between the landscape outside and what is served at the table.
A Special Chapel With A New Life
Another historic building on the estate is the small chapel beside the main hotel.
Built in 1911 from native timbers including Matai and Rimu, the chapel was originally located in Grovetown before being moved to its present site in 1999.
Following renovation, it was transformed into the Chapel Bar and guest lounge. The space connects with a large outdoor fireplace and is available exclusively to hotel guests.
The chapel's transformation provides another example of how The Marlborough has retained elements of its heritage while giving them a new purpose.
It is also an appealing place for guests to relax before dinner or enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the estate.
The Flavours Of Marlborough

The surrounding vineyards produce a diverse range of varieties, while the region's food producers provide an abundance of seasonal ingredients.
The Marlborough's own vineyard contributes wines to the hotel experience, while its organic vegetable garden supplies produce directly to Harvest Restaurant.
For visitors interested in food and wine tourism, this creates an opportunity to experience the region without travelling far from their accommodation.
Wine tours can also be arranged, with guests able to explore Marlborough's vineyards and discover the region's wine producers.
Exploring Marlborough Beyond The Hotel
Although The Marlborough provides plenty of reasons to stay on the property, its location also makes it a useful base for exploring the wider region.
The estate is approximately ten minutes from Blenheim Airport and 15 minutes from Blenheim, while the Marlborough Sounds are around 25 minutes away by car.
The Marlborough Sounds provide opportunities for walking, boating, kayaking and wildlife experiences. The Queen Charlotte Track and other scenic attractions add further opportunities for outdoor exploration.
Closer to Blenheim, visitors can discover the region's extensive collection of wineries and cellar doors.
The Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre is another notable attraction in the region and provides a fascinating experience for visitors interested in aviation and military history.
A Distinctive Setting For Business Events
Although The Marlborough is an intimate boutique hotel rather than a large convention property, its character makes it particularly interesting for incentive groups, corporate retreats, private gatherings and exclusive-use events.
The ability to take over the property for exclusive use provides businesses and groups with an opportunity to create a more private experience.
Rather than a traditional conference environment, the setting lends itself to relationship building, executive retreats, incentive travel and special corporate occasions.
Guests can combine accommodation, food and wine experiences, garden walks and regional activities within a single Marlborough programme.

The Marlborough exhibited as part of the Marlborough Collective at Stand 166, presenting the hotel and wider region to event buyers and industry professionals. The hotel's representatives highlighted developments including new Junior Suites planned for 2027.
The wider Marlborough team showcased the region's combination of vineyards, food, heritage, attractions and hospitality as an appealing destination for conferences, incentives and business events.
For international incentive planners, the opportunity to combine boutique accommodation with wine experiences and the scenery of the Marlborough region provides a compelling alternative to more conventional event destinations.
A New Chapter With Vineyard Suites
The Marlborough is continuing to develop its accommodation offering.
The hotel has announced plans for new Vineyard Suites, designed to enhance the estate while preserving the peaceful atmosphere of the historic main house, gardens and Harvest Restaurant. The new suites will be located away from the historic building.
The development represents another chapter in the evolution of the property while maintaining its focus on heritage, tranquillity and the surrounding vineyard landscape.
A Boutique Hotel With A Strong Sense Of Place
What makes The Marlborough particularly distinctive is the way its different elements work together.
The historic convent provides architectural character. The ten guest rooms create an intimate atmosphere. The gardens provide space and tranquillity. The working vineyard connects the property to Marlborough's wine culture, while Harvest Restaurant brings local produce and regional flavours to the table.
Together, these elements create a hotel experience that feels closely connected to its surroundings.
For leisure travellers, it provides a peaceful base for discovering Marlborough's wine country. For couples, it offers a romantic setting. For groups and corporate travellers, exclusive use opens possibilities for private retreats, incentive programmes and special events.
