Seven New Projects to Support Sustainable Growth
The cooperation agreements were signed on 16 June 2026 during a formal ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vientiane, the capital of Laos.
Representing the Lao Government was Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Maithong Thammavongsa, while Chinese Ambassador to the Lao PDR Fang Hong signed on behalf of the Chinese Government. Representatives from several Lao ministries attended the ceremony as official witnesses, reflecting the importance of the new development initiatives.
The seven approved projects will receive a combined investment of US$3.31 million under the ninth batch of the Mekong-Lancang Special Fund (MLSF) for 2026.

Understanding the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Framework
The Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) framework was established in 2016 to strengthen collaboration among the six countries connected by the Mekong River system.
Its member nations include Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. Together, these countries work to promote sustainable development, improve regional connectivity, encourage economic cooperation and protect the valuable natural resources of the Mekong Basin.
The Mekong-Lancang Special Fund was launched by China in the same year and began financing development projects in 2017. Since then, it has become an important source of practical support for initiatives that improve livelihoods throughout the region.

Over the past ten years, Laos has received funding for 100 development projects with a combined value exceeding US$26 million through the Mekong-Lancang Special Fund.
