Access for all: Eight Queensland experiences for low-hearing and deaf travellers

Queensland Performing Arts Centre
Across Australia, one in six are affected by hearing loss, with approximately 30,000 Deaf Auslan users living with total hearing loss[1]. Meanwhile, due to an ageing population, it’s estimated that by 2050 one in every four Australians will experience some hearing loss in their lives[2]. But those who are hard of hearing do not have to miss out on enriching travel experiences, with Queensland rolling out the welcome mat for everyone to make memories in the Sunshine State. From world-class art galleries to outstanding theatre productions, ancient rainforests and wildlife encounters, these eight Queensland experiences will get all the senses firing.

1) World-class performances in the heart of Brisbane

Brisbane’s exciting calendar of theatre, cultural exhibitions and performing arts is accessible through a range of hearing technologies and Auslan-interpreted shows. The Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) offers an assistive listening system (ALS) to send audio directly to headphones, hearing aids, or cochlear implants - with ListenTech available free of charge. Select performances are professionally signed by Auslan interpreters, with theatregoers encouraged to download the GoTheatrical app to access live captions on mobile or tablet devices.

2) Further down the river, Brisbane Powerhouse

offers a range of select Auslan performances throughout the year, as well as hearing loops for everyone to enjoy the year-round festivities.

3) Wander through the rainforest in Cairns & Great Barrier Reef

As the world’s oldest continually surviving rainforest, the Daintree Rainforest in the Wet Tropics is home to an impressively diverse environment and thousands of distinctive wildlife species that need to be experienced to be believed. The Daintree Discovery Centre is a great place to do just this. Spark curiosity in this ancient landscape at the Interpretive Display Centre, featuring interactive touch-screen kiosks help set bearings, before setting off on a self-guided tour. Guides are fitted with a T switch suitable for hearing aids. Ascend the Aerial Walkway to take in canopy views, complete with interpretive guidebooks highlighting not to miss points of interest.

4) Be inspired by art in South East Queensland

Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art
In the state’s capital, QAGOMA’s (Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art) award-winning accessibility program offers customised programs for low-hearing and deaf art lovers. Free volunteer guided tours for members of the Deaf community are scheduled on the last Sunday of the month from January to November, with a NAATI accredited Auslan interpreter accompanying the gallery guide. Visitors with cochlear implants, hearing aids or hearing loss are invited to join a small group tour led by a volunteer guide on the fourth Friday of the month between January and November, with assistive listening devices (FM system) available. Visitors can also enjoy rare film viewings at the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art’s Australian Cinémathèque, with a hearing loop system to support those with hearing aids and implants.

5) On the Gold Coast, HOTA

(which stands for Home of the Arts) is committed to bringing art to the hearts of all, with Auslan assistive listening carrier devices and Auslan-interpreted programs, including tours with the HOTA Gallery Artist Educator, regularly scheduled.

6) Say hello to a wild world of wildlife on the Gold Coast

Twenty-seven hectares of rainforest and animal encounters await at the Gold Coast’s iconic Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. Meet native animals, tour the animal hospital, and catch the Wild Skies Free Flight Bird Show which has hearing augmentation via an assisted listening service, amplifying sound through headphones (hired from Visitor and Member Services).

7) Festival fun on the Sunshine Coast

Horizon Festival
Art and culture shines on the Sunshine Coast during the annual Horizon Festival. This ten-day multi-arts festival celebrates music, arts, theatre, dance and more, from the beach to the hinterland and the townships in between. Bringing art experiences to those with low-hearing or deafness, some performances feature Auslan interpreted shows on select dates, while the festival also offers an interpreting service, meaning eventgoers can request an Auslan interpreter for events, where possible. Visitors who would like an Auslan interpreter and seating with clear sightlines to interpreters are asked to contact the festival organisers to book.

8) Discover the magic of the stars, planets and universe beyond

Located in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens at the base of iconic Mt Coot-tha, Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium skyrockets wonder in space and astronomy. Learn about the solar system and human space exploration in the Display Zone, which includes written and pictorial information, while glow-in-the-dark gloves are available for Auslan interpretation.

Escape the Crowds in 2024: Discover Spain's Authentic Art, Culture and Cities Beyond Barcelona and Madrid

Granada
Spain is a country with a rich make up of history, art and culture that extends far beyond the well-trodden paths of Barcelona and Madrid.

To escape the crowds in 2024, travellers can head to the lesser-visited cities of Spain, where architectural marvels, historic town centres, hidden art and culinary delights await to enchant travellers seeking a genuine Spanish adventure.

Here are some less-touristy cities that every intrepid traveller should explore to immerse themselves in the heart of authentic Spain:

Salamanca

A timeless university town, Salamanca boasts an awe-inspiring blend of Gothic and Plateresque architecture. The city's historic centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, invites visitors to wander through cobbled streets, admire majestic cathedrals, and revel in the lively atmosphere created by students and locals alike. Salamanca beautifully blends the old with the new, and visitors can immerse themselves in the legends and mystery of the Cave of Salamanca (crypt of San Cebrian), through to wandering the colourful outdoor urban art gallery of the city's Barrio del Oeste district.

Granada

Nestled against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Granada is a living testament to Spain's Islamic past. The magnificent Alhambra Palace, a masterpiece of Moorish architecture, will transport visitors back in time. Unravel the charm of Albaicín, a labyrinth of narrow streets and white-washed houses, to witness breathtaking views of the Alhambra and experience authentic Andalusian hospitality. Due to its Arabic influence, the city still today houses many Arab baths (or hammam) where visitors can soak up the history and traditions of this ancient sub-culture of Spain.

Valencia

Valencia
Known for its futuristic City of Arts and Sciences, Valencia offers a contemporary contrast to its historic treasures. The city's vibrant street art scene, the lively Mercado Central, and its signature dish, paella, make it a true haven for art, culture, and culinary enthusiasts. Don't miss the Fallas bonfire festival of San Jose, held in the city each March.

Bilbao

While Guggenheim Museum Bilbao has put the city on the map for modern day travellers, Bilbao offers much more than modern art. Explore the charming Casco Viejo, the old town, to discover its medieval architecture, indulge in pintxos (Basque tapas), and experience the vibrant Basque culture. This is one of Spain's most avant-garde cities, and a city bursting with flavour.

Córdoba

Cordoba
This historic city showcases a fascinating blend of Islamic, Christian, and Jewish influences. The highlight of Córdoba is the Mezquita, a stunning mosque-cathedral with a mesmerising forest of arches. Stroll through the narrow streets of the Jewish Quarter, visit beautiful patios adorned with flowers, and savour traditional Andalusian dishes for an authentic experience.

San Sebastian

Located in the Basque Country, San Sebastian is a coastal gem known for its breathtaking beaches, picturesque bay, and top-notch culinary scene. The city's pintxos (Basque tapas) are legendary, and the charming Old Town, Parte Vieja, offers a vibrant ambiance for culinary adventures and exploration.

Spain's unexplored cities offer an intimate and immersive experience, providing travellers with the opportunity to delve into the country's cultural riches, architectural marvels, and distinct regional flavours.

Sensational new stays in the Sunshine State

Pelorus Private Island
Queensland has welcomed a raft of new holiday experiences in 2023, including an impressive lineup of firsts: the first five-star luxury hotel knocking on Townsville’s door.

Turning up the luxury dial, Townsville is about to welcome an exclusive new retreat on the Great Barrier Reef, accessible by helicopter or private yacht. Enter, Pelorus Private Island. Set to open before the end of the year, the island, which is surrounded by fringing reefs, features a spacious residence with four super swish suites, making it the only luxury private island in the Townsville region. Back on the mainland, $88 million resort Ardo will be the first five-star luxury hotel in Townsville. Opening in December, Ardo promises to deliver premium accommodation, world-class dining, a deluxe day spa, and a stunning rooftop pool deck and bar with panoramic views across the Coral Sea to Magnetic Island.

Following a fresh facelift The Elandra at Mission Beach will re-launch late 2023 with the first 20 revamped villas throwing their doors open to new guests by the end of this year. A further 12 two-level apartments, each with private plunge pools, are scheduled to open in the first half of 2024. Perched atop a peninsular overlooking the Coral Sea, guests can sit back and soak up the island views enjoyed by singer, model and actress, Grace Jones, when she ushered in the resort in 2008.

Essence Peregian Beach
Sink into a state of pure serenity at the new Essence Peregian Beach on the Sunshine Coast. Nestled on the edge of Noosa National Park just footsteps from the bustling village of Peregian and the patrolled surf beach, the new property comprises a 32-room boutique hotel and 20 architecturally designed beach homes. Meanwhile, at the southern end of the Sunshine Coast, an 80s-era lodge, the Caloundra City Centre Motel, has been fashionably transformed into Motel Caloundra. The refurbished property offers nine stylish rooms including a family room and apartment (both with two bedrooms) just a short stroll from Bulcock Beach. Owners Andrew and Lucy Pink have installed 47 rooftop solar panels to harness renewable energy sources in their quest to become the Sunshine Coast’s first net-zero energy hotel.

Escape to Binna Burra’s brand-new Tiny Wild Houses to experience the breathtaking beauty of Lamington National Park in the Scenic Rim. Nestled atop an expansive clifftop, the Tiny Wild Houses feature Queen-sized beds and floor to ceiling glass windows providing stunning vistas across the valley. The Tiny Wild Houses are designed exclusively as an adult-only experience. Also tucked away in the Scenic Rim, new boutique accommodation, The Vistas at Cedar Creek Lodges snuggle into the rainforest of Tamborine Mountain. Under an hour’s drive from the Gold Coast, the 20 bespoke suites offer cosy holidays for up to three guests each.

Rolling Seas
Back on the coast, Rolling Seas at the southern end of the Gold Coast has just opened its dreamy doors to uninterrupted views of Bilinga Beach. The private residence fuses the charm of Hellenic-style white-washed exteriors with Hamptons sophistication to accommodate up to 12 guests across two separate villas. Nearby at Palm Beach, turn back the clock and step into nostalgia at the soon-to-open Cheshire Cat Motel. Oozing an eclectic mix of 70’s Australiana and Palm Springs, the boutique accommodation is set to open this summer and has seven rooms, including a two-bedroom bungalow for a stay with just that little bit extra space.

Still chic, but more heritage in style, Charleville’s iconic Hotel Corones welcomed three Heritage Rooftop Rooms earlier this year. Reflecting the charm of the Outback, the rooftop rooms offer period furniture and access to the outdoor rooftop Champagne Bath Deck for a sunset soak and sip.

Savour the Flavour of Summer with Sailmaker Restaurant's New Seasonal and Sustainable Seafood Experience

Sailmaker announces its summer edition of the Seafarer Dinner - a seasonal three-course Choice Menu with produce exclusively sourced from sustainable fisheries.

Sydney's most indulgent and sustainable seafood experience has been re-imagined at Hyatt Regency Sydney's Sailmaker Restaurant. The Seafarer Dinner is a continuation of Hyatt's philosophy of 'Food. Thoughtfully Sourced. Carefully Served', and working with sustainable suppliers is the core mission of the culinary team, led by Executive Chef Sven Ullrich.

The elevated three-course Seafarer Dinner has been created with produce exclusively sourced from sustainable fisheries that practice eco-friendly farming or offer wild caught product. With passion and dedication to exquisite flavours and innovative culinary creations, the latest menu underscores Sailmaker's commitment to environmental sustainability and provides a delectable dining experience.

“We work closely with partners and source produce from all corners of Australia and New Zealand to ensure each dish is not only delicious, but sustainable. I am passionate about working with local suppliers and farmers to hand-pick the best and freshest ingredients for each dish whilst being guided by what's in season. It's important for us to share our sustainability story and the origins of our dishes with our guests. In line with broader consumer trends, we are finding people are increasingly receptive of our 'ocean to plate' style philosophy and support of local farmers – eating seasonally and mindfully is when produce is at its very best,” said Executive Chef, Sven Ullrich.

Sailmaker's summer menu includes sustainably raised kingfish from Clean Seas – Spencer Gulf, South Australia, whilst the barramundi is from the renowned Humpty Doo farm, Northern Territory and the Murray cod is from Aquna, a premium and sustainable pond-grown Murray cod farm in the Riverina, New South Wales. The bread on Sailmaker's menu is sourced locally from PiOik Bakery where all products are handmade using organic, market-fresh seasonal ingredients and no preservatives. With the restaurant's butter being batch churned from single origin cream, creating a less processed product, sourced locally from Pepe Saya Buttery.

On arrival, guests are invited to enjoy the Mediterranean tapas table filled with breads, grilled artichoke, stuffed peppadew, smoked mozzarella, cured olives, dips and more, designed to be shared family style. As part of the Seafarer Dinner experience, guests can then choose from a selection of six entrées and six mains – with other standout dishes including Fremantle octopus, Skull Island prawns, Hawkesbury River oysters and more, accompanied by the finest Australian ingredients and paired with a carefully crafted wine list with New South Wales wine heroes at the forefront. To finish the evening, a sweets trolley will see mouth-watering desserts prepared and served table side – from classics like chocolate brownie or Basque cheesecake, to enchanting flavours like pear-rhubarb cobbler.

The Seafarer Dinner menu is available every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening from 6pm to 9:30pm, with guests able to indulge in the Choice Menu for $89 per person.

Whilst heavily inspired by the ocean, there are also vegetarian, vegan and meat options for those not looking for pesca dining.

Escape from Dachau

For the first time, a story of one man’s miraculous rescue from Nazi Germany’s first concentration camp is being published.

Escape from Dachau: A True Story of Survival, Courage, and a Daring Escape in the Face of Unthinkable Evil is the true story of the life of Kathe Mueller Slonim, who was a child when her father was dragged off to Nazi Germany’s first concentration camp, Dachau.

Through a series of remarkable events, her family, including her father, escaped and immigrated to America, where the secrets of their survival remained under wraps for decades.

Kathe’s daughter, Susan, heard her mother’s story for the first time on a trip to Germany in 2000 as part of a visitor program for former Jewish citizens of Stuttgart.

While on the trip, other survivors began sharing their stories and this helped Kathe recount her own experiences for the first time.

After the trip Kathe wrote her memoir but asked that this not be published until after her death.

When Kathe passed away in 2021 her children helped get the book published.

Containing archival photos, Escape from Dachau ‘pays tribute to the bravery, sacrifice and resilience of those who sought to flee the horrors of Nazi Germany during one of the darkest periods of human history and is a dramatic example of how the human spirit can overcome even the worst atrocities’.
