Top 10 travel tips for backpackers

The beauty of being a backpacker is you can travel light and enjoy travelling at your own pace. When it comes to preparing for your trip, the more thought you put in early on, the smoother your journey will be.

Use these 10 top backpacking tips to make your trip memorable for all the right reasons.
  1. Buy a good backpack from a trusted brand. Schedule a visit to a camping and travel store and be prepared to spend some time finding the right pack for you. Ask an assistant for help to make sure that the bag isn’t too big for your height and weight, has good back support and all the right features. Good retail outlets will have someone on hand who can adjust the bag in store to make sure it fits perfectly.
  2. Photocopy your passport. Keep a copy in your luggage and email a copy to yourself, so you’ll have access to the details online. It’s also a good idea to give a copy to a friend or family member, as well as providing a copy of your itinerary and contact details to them in case of emergency.
  3. Organise your visas. Little ruins a travelling experience more than being stopped at the border because you haven’t got a visa. Make sure you research the visas you will need for the countries you intend to visit and allow plenty of time to organise them.
  4. Have a cash backup. Because it’s so easy to use a card instead of cash these days we often forget a backup plan. If you’re travelling off the beaten track, it’s a good idea to keep $100 in American currency as a backup. It’s accepted in most countries and you can even use smaller notes in many places around the world.
  5. Secure your bags. Though most hostels offer great security, also make sure you have good locks on your bags. A chain can also be used to attach your luggage to the bed - this way your bag can’t simply be grabbed and taken while you’re out of your room. Remember that only TSA (Transportation Security Administration, the US agency for transport security) approved locks should be used when flying. Airport security inspectors may cut off locks used to secure checked bags if they’re not TSA approved.
  6. Be prepared. Have a copy of all your hostel addresses handy (and translated if travelling abroad), as well as the hostel phone numbers and the contact details for the embassy of the countries you’ll be visiting.
  7. Allow time. When booking flights always check the time zone differences if you have connecting flights, and make sure you give enough time between flights to change terminals, pick up and transfer your luggage.
  8. You’ll meet plenty of great people as you go, but you may get home after a couple of months travel and have trouble remembering who was who. When writing down phone numbers and emails, write a little bit about the person next to it. It may seem silly at the time but you’ll appreciate it after you’ve been on the road for a while.
  9. Pack for all occasions. If you use sites such as TripAdvisor or Hostelworld you’ll be sure to find great accommodation. Some places, however, will be quite basic – especially outside of the main centres, so take your own water, pillowcase, sheet insert, earplugs for a good night’s sleep and flip flops to avoid foot nasties in the shower.
  10. Use your manners. Being polite can make or break a trip and how you’re treated. You’ll have a great time if you respect the culture of the countries you visit and make an effort to dress appropriately and learn at least some basic words, such as hello, please and thank you.

Stenden University Qatar wins flagship research grant from QNRF

Dr Dan Musinguzi
Stenden University Qatar (SUQ) is embarking on the first phase of a QR856,000 research project funded by the prestigious National Priorities Research Programme (NPRP) – the flagship funding programme of Qatar Foundation’s Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) - to promote a sustainable and positive legacy for Qatar’s FIFA World Cup in 2022.

The two-year research project, entitled “Leveraging the 2022 Qatar World Football Cup for the promotion of green and active living: a multiple stakeholder evaluation of strategic options” is a collaboration with Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland. The focus will be on promoting healthy, active lifestyles as well as green initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint in Qatar.

This is the first Stenden research project to have been awarded QNRF funding, and signals a new emphasis on research at SUQ as the university’s academics gear up to initiate a number of tourism research projects to help realise the Qatar National Tourism Sector Strategy.

Lecturer Dr Dan Musinguzi – a research specialist in tourism impacts, residents’ perceptions of tourism, service quality and cultural heritage – and Stephanie Bourne are collaborating with Edinburgh Napier University experts Dr Eleni Theodoraki, Dr Jane Ali-Knight and Dr Maktoba Omar. Dr Theodoraki is an international events expert recently involved with UNESCO in preparing the sports policy agenda for the World Congress of Sport Ministers. Mayor of London Boris Johnson also appointed her to be the commissioner in the commission of a Sustainable London 2012.

The team of researchers will liaise with event organisers, public health experts, physical educators, city planners and environmental agencies in Qatar to develop findings that will be shared with the Qatar government and FIFA.

Initially, researchers will contact event organisers in Qatar across multiple sectors including sports, health, education, banking, retail business and technologyto assess through an online questionnaire what green and active campaigns and messages are currently being promoted in Qatar via events. The project aims to be a knowledge-sharing platform, setting up a network for all organisers to ensure their events promote positive social habits. Recycling and low carbon use are amongst these as well as increased physical activity and sports participation, all of which will help to create a positive legacy from the 2022 World Cup.

SUQ’s Dr Dan Muzinguzi said: “This is a fascinating and highly topical issue, not only in Qatar but for the organisers of many international events throughout the world – how they can create a sustainable legacy from events to benefit those living in the country for years to come.

“We are grateful to QNRF for their generous funding and to our partners at Edinburgh Napier University. As Stenden continues to strengthen its research capabilities, this will be the first of many new research projects our academic experts will be working on to support sports’ tourism development and diversification of Qatar’s economy.”

Dr Eleni Theodoraki, from Edinburgh Napier University’s Institute: Festivals, Events, Tourism, said: “Mega sporting events have the power to inspire social change. Qatar has a great opportunity to use the 2022 World Cup to encourage people to adopt green and active lifestyles.

“By engaging with experts in Qatar and the UK we aim to find out what opportunities exist to promote environmentally sound habits such as recycling and low carbon use, as well as healthy physical activity and sports participation in the run up to the event, and beyond it.”

The questionnaire will also be accessible to event organizers via the group’s Facebook page: Green and Active Living Qatar.

IT&CM China’s Returning Association Day Centres on Priorities of Chinese Association Executives

The importance of the Professional Conference Organiser (PCO) in winning business for China, organising large-scale association meetings, and the benefits on associations to use social media to propel their association meetings’ ROI. These highlights of this year’s Association Day – returning for the 2nd consecutive year – reflect the urgencies and priorities that today’s Chinese Association Executives need to master.

Alicia Yao, General Manager of IME Consulting said, “Everyone knows the invaluable benefits that come with being a host destination of an association meeting. With China being a relatively new player in the industry, coupled with its culturally unique and geographically vast traits, success might not come easy especially when other more experienced destinations are vying for the same business.” According to Yao, this is where local Chinese PCOs can play a strong role to help Chinese associations collaborate with their international counterparts to bring meetings to China. As the head honcho of a PCO company, she adds, “The emergence of more professional PCOs strengthen China’s position as a MICE destination. In turn, there will be more international conferences being held in China which goes into improving our economy and technology development.”

Yao is just one of the Association Day expert speakers that will be lending expertise and knowledge to champion the forums. Joining her in the plenary session “Association Meetings in China: The Role of a PCO in Winning Business for China” are China National Convention Center’s Senior Director, Jennifer Salsbury, and Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences’ Vice-Chairman, Department of Immunology, Huang Bo. The duo will complete the well-rounded discussion by bringing perspectives of a Convention Centre and a Chinese Association respectively.

Other established authorities fronting the Association Day sessions include local representatives from China Electrical Equipment Industry, China Nonprescription Medicines Association, Eventown Group, International Dragon Award (IDA) Executive Committee, and Meeting Professionals International (MPI).

The positive growth of Chinese associations and their membership numbers also present logistical and planning challenges of organising large-scale meetings, especially when it takes place outside of the country. “This is a scenario that many local Chinese associations are increasingly facing,” comments Richard Wu, Chairman of the IDA Executive Committee, and speaker of “Learning from Success: Large-scale Association Meetings”. He invites anyone interested to tap on his ready experience to attend this session. “I will be sharing a success case-study based on our recently concluded International Dragon Award Annual Conference held in 2013. Since 1996, we have held our congress in 15 different cities and each year we faced different challenges. Delegates will learn how they can obtain strong support from the local government, how to adapt to the different cultures from all over the world, and how they can attract officials to attend their congress,” says Wu.

Facilitator of “Social Media: A New Paradigm for Association Meetings?”, Zhang Nan, Project Manager of MPI shared the motivation behind the significance of this session. “The Chinese are leading the new trend of consumption which means social media is fast becoming an important source of information for the brand and product decision. Besides the benefits of social media, delegates will learn how to develop a social media marketing strategy, build the social infrastructure for their events and integrate social media with online registration.” Fellow MPI members Tang Liang, Founder and CEO of Eventown Group, Tong Jing, Deputy Secretary-General of China Nonprescription Medicines Association and Lu Chenyu, Director of Standard Institute of China Electrical Equipment Industry. On why this is a must-attend session, Zhang summarises, “As the largest and most vibrant global meeting and event industry association, this MPI-led session is a great opportunity for delegates to understand how leveraging on social media is beneficial for their associations to be relevant.”

Shanghai Business Events Week’s Anchor Event, IT&CM China To Open With Record-Breaking Chinese Delegation

Collectively, buying responsibilities of the attending local buyers span across all 31 administrative divisions of Mainland China, and encompass both outbound and domestic MICE procurement. Through CITS’ 30 buyer representatives alone, they represent a wide and diverse range of corporate, government and association clients in China with connections to more than 1,400 tour operators and travel agencies in all parts of the world. IT&CM China’s collaboration with the newly formed MICE Committee of China Association of Travel Services (CATS) is also credited with delivering some 50 MICE buyers from close to 40 established travel agencies across China.

“IT&CM China 2014’s achievement in attracting both quality and quantity of Chinese buyers is not just a reflection of the massive buying interest from Mainland China, but also the strength of the organisers’ network and resources to reach valuable segments that both our International and Domestic exhibitors deliver,” commented Zhang Jian, Executive GM of CITS International MICE, one of the show’s three co-organisers on this year’s dominance of Chinese buyers.

Adding to the significance of this, Darren Ng, Managing Director of TTG Asia Media, co-organiser behind IT&CM China, remarked, “The Chinese MICE industry itself is burgeoning at 20% annually, reflecting endless opportunities for both international and domestic MICE suppliers alike. Our unsurpassed proportion of Chinese buyers fulfils both international and local suppliers’ intention of boosting outbound and domestic traffic respectively.”

Other 2014 event highlights include the overwhelming percentage of new buyers, largest exhibition showcase edition in IT&CM China’s history, and launch of Association Meetings and Corporate Travel presentations as part of the returning Association Day and Corporate Travel programme on the 16 and 17 April respectively.

The overwhelming potential of fresh procurement opportunities made tangible as a result of a whopping 65% new buyers across the board, has scored top marks among exhibitors and other stakeholder delegates. This was made possible through several initiatives including the partnerships with CATS, as well as an advisory board of proactive local corporate travel authorities that led to the Corporate Travel Roundtable road show series launched last year in Shanghai and Chengdu. These efforts contributed to new Chinese MICE and Corporate buyer faces at IT&CM China 2014. International buyers also witnessed new buyer pools in its mix this year, where 15 international Media Affiliates, as part of a revamped media partnership programme, introduced close to 50 new hosted buyers from the MICE, Associations and Corporate Travel sectors from around the world.

On the exhibition front, IT&CM China attracted the official representation of over 20 leading NTOs and CVBs from China, Asian regions and beyond including Guilin, Hangzhou, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Jeju, Korea, Malaysia, Macau, Ningbo, Philippines, Sanya, Shanghai, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Suzhou, Taihu, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates and Xiamen. This year’s showcase also features 154 new exhibiting organisations, as well as new representatives from the cruise and airline sectors and offerings from the United Kingdom and the United States of America, making this IT&CM China 2014 exhibition edition the largest in its history.

IT&CM China 2014 will welcome some 3,000 MICE professionals from sectors including DMCs, PCOs, corporate travel and associations from both International and Chinese regions. Other event features include more than 600 registered buyers, 400 hosted delegates, over 12,000 on-site business appointments and more than 70 business, education and networking sessions over the next three days. IT&CM China 2014 pre-event activities kick-off today with city tours of Shanghai and on-site registration of pre-registered delegates. Shanghai Business Events Week runs from today to 19 April.

Electrosonic Helps English Heritage Unfold the Legend of Stonehenge‏

Since its opening on the 18th December 2013, the new Stonehenge exhibition and visitor centre has welcomed over 50,000 visitors. The centre makes dramatic use of high resolution projection technology to help visitors learn about one of the world’s most important prehistoric monuments. Electrosonic was responsible for the audio-visual systems design and integration.

The centre, located 1.5 miles from Stonehenge itself, is the first phase of English Heritage's £27-million project to transform the visitor experience of this iconic site. To date, it is their largest ever capital investment project.

The visitor centre uses audio-visual technology extensively to give visitors an enthralling introduction to the legend of the stones, exploring the history and debate surrounding this ancient monument. One of the main highlights is the ‘Standing in the Stones’ exhibit, a 360-degree virtual experience. Installed by Electrosonic, the exhibit lets visitors stand in a virtual Stonehenge as it is today and in the past. The three-minute film, based on state-of-the-art laser scan images of the stone circle, transports viewers back in time through the millennia, enabling them to experience the summer and winter solstices.

Robert Campbell, Head of Interpretation at Stonehenge, says, “Electrosonic brought a can-do attitude to this complex and high profile project. This was essential in getting the exhibition open on time and working well.”

An exhibit like ‘Standing in the Stones’ requires great care in execution. An important part of its development was the ability to preview it in a full scale mock-up at Electrosonic’s workshop at its head office in Kent. This procedure helped the producers, Centre Screen Productions, assisted by Studio Liddell, check the content at full size, whilst ensuring English Heritage could be confident in the outcome and be aware of audience circulation issues.

“Standing in the Stones” uses six Panasonic PT-DZ770 single chip DLP™ projectors with 1920×1200 resolution and nominal 7000 lumen light output. These are sourced from a 7th Sense Delta server via Atlona extenders. The audio chain includes a BSS BLU 100 DSP, four Crown CTs600 amplifiers and seven Tannoy Di5 loudspeakers augmented by a ceiling mounted sub bass loudspeaker.

Visitors move from ‘Standing in the Stones’ into the next exhibition area housing more audio-visual elements. The ‘Meaning’ section includes four portrait format 32-inch LCDs showing a linear programme on the debate around the ‘Meaning of Stonehenge’. ‘Landscape’ the largest audio-visual element, is a giant image of the Stonehenge World Heritage Site projected onto a wall screen which shows how people changed the over the pre-historic period by building different monuments. The exhibit uses three Panasonic PT-DX610ELKsingle chip DLP™ projectors with XGA resolution and nominal 6500 lumen output sourced from a 7the Sense Delta server via Atlona extenders.

The visitor centre also contains an education space which is equipped with appropriate room control and audio-visual facilities. The space can be divided into two, one half has a ceiling mounted Panasonic VW435NEA LCD projector with WXGA resolution, and the other half has an 87-inch Smartboard touch screen. Room control is by a Crestron MC2E controller and wall panels allow the connection of “Bring Your Own” sources.

Haley Sharpe Design managed the production of the exhibition, with The Hub as exhibition fit-out contractor and Goppion as the supplier of the display cases. ‘Standing in the Stones’ was produced by Centre Screen productions, assisted by Studio Liddell and with a sound track by Peter Key. The content for the “Meaning” displays, the LCDs within the display cases and for the ticket office audio guide was produced by ISO Design, and the “Landscape” content was produced by Squint Opera.

Electrosonic engineered the AV system under a direct contract with English Heritage.
