Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s island jewel, is gearing up for a transformation that will place it firmly on the world’s tourism and economic stage. With the announcement that Phu Quoc International Airport will undergo a sweeping expansion to support the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in 2027, the island is set to soar in more ways than one.

Preparing for the World’s Spotlight

As the host of the prestigious APEC 2027 summit, Phu Quoc will welcome leaders, diplomats, and decision-makers from 21 member economies. To meet the expected demand, the airport in Kien Giang Province is undergoing a two-phase expansion that will not only accommodate the event, but also shape the long-term future of air travel in the region.

The first phase will cover 1,050 hectares with an investment of over VND 26.5 trillion (USD 1.02 billion), increasing the airport’s annual capacity from 4 million to 18 million passengers by 2027. A second phase, estimated at VND 25.79 trillion (USD 1 billion), will extend the airport’s capacity to an impressive 50 million passengers by 2050.

A New Terminal Inspired by the Phoenix

A centrepiece of the expansion is a striking new terminal designed by Singapore-based CPG Airport Consultants. Inspired by the mythical phoenix, the terminal will symbolise rebirth, strength, and vision. It will feature smart systems including remote check-in, automated baggage handling, and biometric identity verification to enhance passenger flow and comfort.

Supporting the terminal will be a second 3,500-meter runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft and long-haul international routes. A massive apron with space for 70 to 80 aircraft will allow the airport to accommodate multiple international flights and official aircraft simultaneously.

VVIP Terminal Brings a Touch of Art and Elegance

For dignitaries and heads of state attending APEC 2027, a dedicated VVIP terminal will be constructed with a sleek design by renowned Italian architect Marco Casamonti. Drawing inspiration from the eagle ray, the building will reflect fluidity, elegance, and the spirit of freedom—a fitting tribute to the global diplomacy it will host.

Infrastructure Beyond the Airport

The airport upgrade is just one part of Phu Quoc’s preparation for APEC 2027. The island is fast-tracking key infrastructure projects including a state-of-the-art Convention and Exhibition Centre, a dedicated international press centre, APEC Square, and integrated smart transport systems. Together, these will ensure seamless connectivity from runway to resort.

A Bold Vision for Tourism and Trade

As Vietnam embraces its role as a regional leader, Phu Quoc is rising as a model of sustainable growth and international readiness. The expanded airport and supporting developments will enhance the island’s appeal to both tourists and investors, ensuring its place as a premier destination in Southeast Asia for decades to come.
