| Techo International Airport near Phnom Penh |
Cambodia is preparing to welcome the future of air travel with the opening of Techo International Airport near Phnom Penh. Scheduled to commence operations on September 9, 2025, this state-of-the-art facility represents a significant milestone for the nation’s aviation infrastructure. The official inauguration ceremony will take place on October 20, 2025, with Prime Minister Hun Manet expected to preside over the event.
Originally planned to open in July, the airport’s launch was postponed following an expert review that identified some unfinished work. The government opted to delay the opening to ensure all standards and safety requirements are fully met. Currently, the construction is nearly complete, with 96 percent of work finalized.
A World-Class Airport for Cambodia
Spanning 2,600 hectares across Kandal and Takeo provinces, Techo International Airport is classified as a 4F-Class facility, designed to handle modern, large-capacity aircraft. Upon opening, it will have the capacity to serve more than 15 million passengers annually, a vital upgrade to support Cambodia’s expanding tourism and business sectors.
The project is a public-private partnership, with the Cambodian government holding a 10 percent stake through the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), and the majority 90 percent owned by the local conglomerate Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC).
Preserving Phnom Penh’s Historic Airport
Despite the excitement surrounding the new airport, Prime Minister Hun Manet has firmly dismissed rumors about the sale of the existing Phnom Penh International Airport. The 66-year-old facility holds deep historical significance, having been established under the guidance of former King Norodom Sihanouk. The government intends to preserve it as a heritage site and public asset.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the airport land, covering approximately 300 hectares in the heart of the capital, remains under state ownership. While future development and maintenance plans are being considered, the government insists the property will not be sold or exchanged for economic projects. This protects the site’s legacy and ensures it continues to serve the people of Phnom Penh.
Looking Ahead
The opening of Techo International Airport marks a major step forward for Cambodia’s connectivity and economic growth. With modern facilities and increased capacity, the airport is poised to become a key hub in the region, enhancing travel experiences for both visitors and locals alike.
For travelers, businesspeople, and investors, the new airport signals Cambodia’s commitment to modernization while respecting its historical roots. As the nation moves toward this exciting future, both airports will play important roles in serving Phnom Penh and the country’s broader development goals.
