Cambodia's High-End Tourism Booms as Luxury Offerings Attract Discerning Travelers

Cambodia
Cambodia is rapidly carving a niche in the luxury tourism sector, drawing affluent travelers from around the world who are seeking more than just the typical backpacker experience. While the country has long been known for its affordable travel options, the recent surge in high-end tourism is a reflection of its evolving landscape and the efforts of the Cambodia Association of Travel Agents (CATA) to promote the Kingdom as a premier luxury destination.

According to Chhay Sivlin, the President of CATA, Cambodia’s tourism market has expanded beyond budget travelers to include a growing number of visitors who demand upscale accommodations, personalized tours, and cultural experiences that cater to their refined tastes. This transition was especially noticeable in the post-pandemic era, as the country’s tourism sector rebounded with impressive speed.

“Cambodia isn’t just about affordability; we offer a wide range of experiences tailored to every budget. However, what sets us apart is our ability to meet the needs of both budget and high-end travelers,” Sivlin said. “We’ve definitely noticed a surge in demand for luxury experiences, especially as the market recovers.”

Luxury tourism in Cambodia has grown with remarkable speed. The country now boasts high-end resorts and boutique hotels that provide exclusive, intimate escapes for travelers looking for something more personal and unique. From Six Senses Krabey Island’s tranquil riverside spa to Zannier Hotels Phum Baitang near the world-renowned Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s luxury scene is gaining international recognition.

International luxury brands have also flocked to the country. High-end chains like Raffles, Amman Resorts, and Rosewood have established a significant presence, with properties offering unparalleled service and unique experiences. A prime example of this trend is Song Saa Private Island, a remote resort off the coast of Sihanoukville, where villas start at over $1,700 per night. It even made it to Conde Nast Traveler's prestigious 2024 Gold List of Best Hotels in the World.

This growth in Cambodia's high-end tourism sector comes at a time when the country is also gaining recognition for its affordability. Agoda recently ranked Phnom Penh as the most affordable destination in Asia for New Year’s celebrations, with an average room rate of just $67 per night. This affordable luxury combination has made Cambodia an attractive choice for travelers looking for exceptional value.

Sivlin remains optimistic about Cambodia's continued growth as a luxury destination. “We expect 2025 to be another strong year for tourism,” she said, with projections of more than 7 million foreign visitors. In 2024, Cambodia saw a 24 percent increase in tourism, with approximately 6.7 million visitors—a significant jump from the previous year.

The country's unique cultural offerings, from the historic Angkor Wat to the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, set Cambodia apart from other regional destinations. Beyond the iconic temples, the vibrancy of daily life, the warmth of the Cambodian people, and the authentic cultural experiences found in the markets and through traditional performances, make Cambodia an exceptional place to visit.

What truly sets Cambodia apart in the luxury tourism sector is its ability to offer a blend of world-class accommodations and experiences without losing its authenticity. The Kingdom is not simply imitating trends from other destinations; it is forging its own path with a focus on sustainable, long-term growth that prioritizes both tourism and the local economy.

As Cambodia’s tourism sector continues to evolve, it is clear that the country is positioning itself as a luxury destination where visitors can enjoy both opulence and authentic cultural experiences. With its combination of historical depth, warm hospitality, and exceptional new resorts, Cambodia’s high-end tourism scene looks set for continued success.
