Travel & Tourism in Latin America Could Boost Region’s Economy by US$260BN Over the Next Decade

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), in collaboration with VFS Global, revealed that the Latin American (LATAM) Travel & Tourism sector could add nearly US$260BN to the region’s economy and create nearly eight million new jobs over the next 10 years.

According to the report, ‘Unlocking Opportunities for Travel & Tourism Growth in LATAM’, this potential growth is dependent on three key policies to unlock annualised growth of 3.4%, reaching a contribution of nearly US$909.2BN.

The report includes a policy package focused on improving LATAM’s growth based on transport infrastructure, visa facilitation, and tourism marketing.

Travel & Tourism is a powerhouse sector in the region, with a contribution of more than US$629BN to the region's economy in 2023, welcoming 86 million international travellers.

The sector was essential for employment last year, providing livelihoods to more than 24.6 million people, equating to 9% of all the jobs in the region.

Julia Simpson, WTTC President & CEO, said: “LATAM's Travel & Tourism sector has witnessed an extraordinary transformation. In the past years, it has grown significantly, contributing immensely to the region's economy.

“Growth potential for Travel & Tourism in LATAM is significant. It has already seen substantial growth since 2000, and with the right policies it could unlock an additional US$260 billion in the next decade.

“Countries in the region need better transport infrastructure, simplified visa processes, improved protection for biodiversity and nature, and effective marketing campaigns to highlight the wealth of destinations in this vibrant region.”

Zubin Karkaria, Founder and CEO of VFS Global, said: “We are delighted to partner with WTTC to unlock the immense potential that Travel & Tourism offer in LATAM.

“Since establishing our presence in LATAM in 2009, we are now the trusted partner of 18 governments, serving 29 cities across 17 countries in the region. VFS Global, with its expertise in visa services and tourism promotion, is committed to playing a pivotal role in harnessing LATAM’s potential. Our involvement can also assist destinations in upskilling the workforce, a crucial component in the tourism sector.

“This comprehensive report serves as a roadmap for stakeholders, including governments and National Tourism Boards, to formulate strategies that unlock the continent's economic potential, attract crucial investments, and boost inbound arrivals. The region stands to gain significantly from our experience in simplifying cross border mobility through highly secure, reliable, efficient, and innovative technology solutions.”

This report delves into the historical journey of the Travel & Tourism sector in LATAM. It's a story of facing challenges head-on, from the Global Financial Crisis in 2008 to the setbacks caused by disease outbreaks and political instability.

Despite all these challenges, the Travel & Tourism sector is on a path to recovery.

According to the global body, 2024 is projected to be a record-breaking year, achieving a GDP contribution of more than US$650 billion, as well as the creation of an additional one million jobs, raising the total to 25.7 million.

Opportunities for LATAM

The report underscores a strategic approach to enhance tourism by integrating investments in infrastructure, improving air connectivity, and simplifying visa procedures.

The report highlights the importance of protecting biodiversity and nature through better water management and the use of low-carbon energy.

These efforts aim to attract more tourists while ensuring environmental sustainability.

Leveraging digital technologies enhances the travel experience and can optimise marketing strategies, supported by data-driven insights. Investing in local people and natural preservation enriches the visitor experience and ensures Travel & Tourism is both sustainable and inclusive.

Finally, ensuring safety measures builds trust and sustains growth in the Travel & Tourism sector. This cohesive strategy aims to strengthen the region’s position as a competitive and appealing destination globally.

These efforts could unlock the potential for environmental preservation, job creation, and economic development in the LATAM Travel & Tourism sector.

MEET THE FINEST REAL T. REX EVER SEEN IN AUSTRALIA

One of the world’s largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossils is the prehistoric star of an internationally touring exhibition that opens this Friday 28 June at Melbourne Museum.

Victoria the T. rex features the biggest and best example of a real T. rex fossil to ever be shown in Australia, and the first ever in Victoria. Open until 20 October in an Australian exclusive, the much-anticipated exhibition transports visitors back in time 66 million years ago, to the age of the Cretaceous when dinosaurs roamed Earth.

The centrepiece of the exhibition is Victoria’s striking and pristinely preserved skeleton. Impressive in size and completion, the fossil is composed of 199 bones, towers over us at 3.6 metres tall and spans more than 12 metres in length. Victoria’s real, immense skull – weighing in at a massive 139kg – is too heavy to be mounted on the body of the skeleton and will be displayed separately so that visitors can come face-to-face with one of the most fearsome animals of all time.

Through state-of-the-art technologies including augmented reality, 3D projection mapping and interactive elements, Victoria the T. rex grants visitors a rare and captivating glimpse into the world of Tyrannosaurus rex. Learn how the species may have experienced smell and sight through multisensory installations, and don’t just listen to what a T. rex may have sounded like – feel it in your bones!

Victoria’s momentous arrival makes Melbourne Museum the only place on Earth where visitors can get up close to not one, but two of the finest examples of real giants from the Cretaceous. Visitors to the exhibition will also gain access to one of the world’s most complete Triceratops fossils, Horridus, who calls Melbourne Museum home and is on permanent display in the award-winning, dynamic Triceratops: Fate of the Dinosaurs.

At IMAX, Horridus stars in an exclusive new documentary, T.REX 3D, that features Melbourne Museum’s beloved Triceratops specimen and Museums Victoria Research Institute palaeontologist Dr Erich Fitzgerald. Propelling Museums Victoria onto 120 IMAX screens globally and narrated by Sam Neill, the documentary sets up a climactic battle between Triceratops and the tyrant lizard king in epic IMAX 3D.

On Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 June dino-lovers are invited to celebrate Victoria’s arrival to Melbourne Museum with the Opening Weekend Dinosaur Party presented as part of Playbound, the vibrant new children’s festival taking over the City of Melbourne these school holidays. The dino-mite events program includes a dino disco, T. rex mask making, a scavenger hunt, fossil pop-ups and T. rex talks for kids.

Those hungry for more can head to Dino Bites – an American-inspired pop-up diner at Melbourne Museum. Visitors can sink their teeth into juicy burgers, fresh salads, creamy soft serves and tasty ‘Happy Bites’ kids’ lunch boxes. The diner also features a 2.5-metre T. rex skull, perfect for photo mementos of your visit.

‘Visitors of all ages have already flocked to Melbourne Museum’s Triceratops exhibition and now the Victorian Government is proud to back this ‘roarsome’ new drawcard opportunity to get up close to a real T. rex.’

The Odd Couple - a comedy of friendship, misunderstandings and flat sharing

The Poker Players in The Odd Couple
The Odd Couple has just opened in Sydney at the Theatre Royal. I was fortunate to go along and see this new production of the old classic.

It is not a musical, nor does it feature dances. It is a comedy play filled with one liners from the various cast members. The laughs increase as the show progresses and we better understand the idiosyncrasies of the cast.

The Odd Couple was written by Neil Simon and first performed in 1965 with Walter Matthau and Art Carney. In 1968 it was made into a movie starring Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon and into a TV series that aired from 197-1975. The Odd Couple is still performed on stages around the world today.

The small Australian cast has many well known actors in it.

Shane Jacobson & Todd McKenny
The two stars of the show that make up The Odd Couple are Shane Jacobson who plays Oscar Madison, the owner of a New York apartment where a weekly poker game is played with his mates. One night one of the players does not arrive, so the card players are worried about him. The other Odd Couple person is Todd McKenny who plays Felix Ungar. Felix turns up and reveals has been thrown out by his wife. Oscar invites him to move into his apartment with him.

Oscar and Felix are an Odd Couple because they have very different personalities. Felix is news reporter who is a neurotic, neatness freak. Oscar is a sportswriter who is reckless spending his money, loves gambling and keeps an untidy house. How do these two men survive in the one apartment when they are so different from each other?

Shane Jacobson is an award-winning actor, presenter, producer and entertainer. Shane began performing at the young age of 8. Since then he has appeared in movies, TV shows and on many stages in Australia and around the world.

Todd McKenny is a acclaimed performer on stage and screen. He has been the leading man in many stage musicals. He has been in many variety and dancing shows on TV as performer and judge. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Peter Allen in The Boy From Oz.

Lucy Durack & Penny McNamee
The two female in the show are sisters who live in an upstairs apartment. Cecily and Gwendolyn are played by Lucy Durack and Penny McNamee. Lucy has been in many stage musicals, TV shows and Podcasts. Penny has starred in leading roles in film, TV and theatre. She was a series regular on Home and Away for 5 years. Lucy and Penny lighten up the second half of he show with the expert timing of their one liners.

The others in the cast are the poker players, Speed played by Laurence Coy, Murray played by Anthony Taufa, Roy played by John Batchelor and Vinnie played by Jamie Oxenbould. Their years of experience on the stage make for an interesting bunch of poker players for Shane and Todd to bounce off.

The one set for the play is a stylish New York apartment where Oscar lives and plays his poker games.  It gives the space for the actors to sit and move around. The cast members come and go through its various doors and entrances throughout the show, as all the action takes place in the apartment.

The Odd Couple is being performed at the Theatre Royal Sydney, which is located at 40 King Street Sydney. It is only on until 28 July 2024, so be quick to book your tickets to get along to this fun show.

Book a distillery or brewery tour

There’s something in the water in the Northern Rivers region – or the terroir, if we’re being accurate – that has borne a high number of exceptional food and drink products. If you’ve been to a pub anywhere in NSW you’ve probably seen Stone & Wood’s bright logo – they’ve been making beer in a sustainable way since 2008. Tucked within a macadamia farm in the hinterland, Cape Byron Distillery offers a true taste of the region, with 17 of the 25 botanicals used in Brookie’s gin sourced locally. TAT sets THB3.5 trillion target for 2024, will boost domestic tourism

Thailand
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) wants to reduce dependency on any single market, while it is working on increasing the average spending of tourists.

As part of the efforts, the TAT aims to stimulate tourism in secondary cities.

TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool revealed that it has set the target for 2024 of generating total revenue of 3.5 trillion baht — 2.5 trillion baht from international tourists and 1 trillion baht from Thai tourists.

In 2024, TAT will focus on quality tourists, evenly distributing tourism, and advancing towards sustainable tourism. This will be done through collaboration with all sectors, placing importance on "creating valuable experiences" through soft power under the strategy of promoting tourism through products and services, she said.

In the domestic market, the TAT will encourage people to travel within Thailand more frequently and explore a greater variety of areas throughout the year with its campaign, "365 Days, Marvellous Thailand Every Day”, that aims to highlight the distinctiveness of each region.

Furthermore, the TAT would also focus on promoting secondary cities, necessitating a re-evaluation of urban planning because currently, in 55 provinces, some secondary cities have attracted more than 4 million tourists, turning them into primary cities.

"Additionally, the Thai Chamber of Commerce is working to elevate 10 secondary cities to primary city status, recognising their economic potential in terms of trade, investment, and tourism,” she said. “The TAT, in collaboration with the chamber of commerce, will be involved in selecting and promoting these 10 secondary cities as pioneers," Thapanee added.

In the first 9 months of 2023, it was observed that in the secondary cities across 55 provinces, there were 73.32 million instances of Thai tourists travelling, reflecting a significant increase of 34.47%. This resulted in tourism-related income amounting to 169.608 billion baht, representing a notable surge of 38.86% compared to the same period in 2022.

With an average travel expenditure of approximately 2,313 baht per person per trip, marking a 3% increase, it is anticipated that the tourism income in secondary cities will see a growth of not less than 40% throughout the year 2023 compared to the entire year of 2022. Looking ahead to 2024, she said they expected 10-15% growth in tourism income year on year.

In the international market, TAT aims to promote tourism through five main strategies: enhancing sustainable brand image, exploring new quality markets, seeking new partnerships, expanding ground transportation connectivity and utilising digital content for marketing.

The TAT anticipates a resurgence of Chinese tourists in 2024, aiming to reclaim the title of the largest source market for Thai tourism. The target for Chinese tourist arrivals has been set at 8.2 million people, generating an income of 450 billion baht, she said. This is more than double the estimated 3.5 million Chinese tourists this year.

Despite the emphasis on the Chinese market, the TAT is actively managing risk by reducing dependency on any single market.

Moreover, the TAT places importance on diversifying and growing markets, with a focus on tourists from four key markets: Malaysia, India, Russia, and Taiwan.

Efforts will also be directed towards promoting growth in emerging markets, such as Saudi Arabia, countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States, stimulating potential growth in markets like the United States, Kazakhstan, and Southeast Asian nations such as Vietnam and Laos.

A Modern Twist on a Timeless Classic: & Juliet the Musical Review, Sydney

& Juliet
Last week I went along to see a mid-week performance of & Juliet at the Sydney Lyric Theater. I'm not a great fan of Shakespeare's famous plays, so I was glad to see this was not a traditional Shakespeare play.

& Juliet is a bold and innovative retelling of Shakespeare's iconic Romeo and Juliet. This high-energy production, directed by Luke Sheppard, offers a fresh and exciting perspective on the classic tale, with a talented cast, stunning costumes, and a catchy pop-rock soundtrack.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show, It was full of music, dancing and laughter. It was like a rock musical, jukebox, pantomime, dance spectacular, pop extravaganza, musical theatre and comedy all combined into one.

& Juliet
The plot of the show was an reimagining of what would happen if William Shakespeare's wife, Anne Hathaway, asked him to rewrite the end of Romeo and Juliet so that Juliet did not die and to give her a new future.

The story takes place in Verona, where Juliet (played by the talented Amy Lehpamer) finds herself at a crossroads. Juliet doesn't die in the tomb, but rather flees to Paris to start a new life. This twist opens up a world of possibilities, allowing the writers to delve into themes of identity, empowerment, and self-discovery.

The basic premise of & Juliet is the various people discovering who they really are and what their purpose is in life. The musical shows that love is a powerful force, but it can also be destructive. The musical shows the importance of self empowerment and making decisions for yourself. It also touches on how the individual relates to family, friends, lovers, former lovers and future lovers.

The staging of the show is spectacular. The ever changing sets, utilizing a revolving stage with drop down and rising sections, are bright a non-stop visual delight. The production values are top-notch, with stunning costumes, clever set design, and impressive choreography. The lighting and sound design are also noteworthy, perfectly capturing the mood and atmosphere of each scene.

& Juliet
The cast was brilliant on the night I saw it. Juliet was paled by Lorinda May Merrypor and Romeo pleyed by Clay Roberts. Shakespeare was played by Rob Mills and his wife Anne Amy Lehpamer. They all sang and danced to perfection.

Other key players were Angelique (Sarah Murr), Lance (Sean Sinclair), May (Jacob Rozario) and
Francois (Jordan Koulos). The chemistry between the leads is palpable, and the supporting cast adds depth and humor to the story.

The real star of the show, however, is the music. I was surprised that I knew most of the songs in & Juliet. The & Juliet soundtrack, written by Max Martin and friends, is a masterclass in pop-rock storytelling. The songs were written by Max Martin for many famous people including the Back Street Boys, Katie Perry, Britney Spears and Pink. Songs included “Oops!...I Did It Again”, “I Kissed a Girl”, “It’s My Life”, “I Want It That Way”, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” and "Eye of the Tiger". The backing band was brilliant with the powerful and quieter song numbers.

& Juliet is a must-see musical for anyone looking for a fresh and exciting take on a classic tale. With its talented cast, catchy soundtrack, and innovative storytelling, this production is sure to leave you smiling and humming the tunes long after the curtain call. & Juliet is a great choice for fans of musical theater, pop music, and anyone looking for a fun and energetic night out.

It was a full theatre on the night I saw & Juliet. I was surprised at the reactions of the audience members throughout the show. It was obvious they were enjoying the show with their applause, laughter and dancing. It even moved one man sitting behind me to tears during some of the scenes. Be quick to secure your tickets, as it closes on 12 July.
