The self-styled Sauna Capital of the World, Tampere is home to most public saunas in Finland, with sauna culture going back to the Rajaportti Sauna, the oldest public sauna still functioning today.
In 2020 the sauna culture from Finland was inscribed on the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the first Finnish element on UNESCO’s list. www.museovirasto.fi/en/articles/sauna-culture-intangiblecultural-heritage
Tampere has almost 60 public saunas in the city and surrounding region and works to preserve the country’s sauna tradition.
In addition to the public sauna’s, some of the city’s hotels and restaurants have saunas.
In addition to saunas, the Vapriikki Museum Center houses several museums, including the Natural History Museum and an exhibition about the 1918 civil war.
There is also the Hockey Hall of Fame, the National Police Museum, the Finnish Postal Museum, Spy Museum and the Finnish Museum of Games. Tampere Market Hall, the largest of its type in the Nordics, and there’s also a wide choice of gastropubs, bars, breweries and cafes.
