Wanuskewin Heritage Park
The Wanuskewin Heritage Park, a National Heritage Site celebrating Northern Plains Indigenous cultures, has been deemed the top Indigenous Tourism Destination of Canada in 2023.

The recognition was made by the Tourism Industry Association of Canada Wanuskewin Heritage Park is located on Treaty Six Territory and Homeland of the Métis, and has been a gathering place for all nations of the Northern Plains for over 6,400 years.
It is the longest-running archaeological dig site in Canada and currently on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage Status.

If and when successful, it will become the first UNESCO site in Saskatchewan.

Saskatchewan is a Canadian province that borders the United States. Grassland covers its southern plains, and to the north are the rugged rock of the Canadian Shield plateau, coniferous forests, rivers and lakes.

Regina, the provincial capital, is home to the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, with exhibits on natural history and the people of Canada’s First Nations.

In making its award the Tourism Industry Association of Canada found that ‘Wanuskewin Heritage Park truly exemplifies the spirit of Indigenous tourism, showcasing a commitment to authenticity, innovation, and enriching the visitor experience, and their dedication has undoubtedly contributed to the growth and promotion of tourism in Saskatoon’.

Wanuskewin was also selected as a finalist in the Culinary Event of the Year for the Han Wi Moon Dinner, which is an annual series of dinners, held annually in August by renowned Indigenous Chef Jenni Lessard.

The dinners feature a three-course meal foraged from the land and served on an ancient bison jump. Guests are then treated to stories and a theatrical performance by local artists immersed in a stunning prairie setting nestled on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River.
