3) SYDNEY ROYAL WOODCHOPPING & SAWING COMPETITION

Woodchopping
Woodchopping is always a favourite at the Show with grandstands full of enthusiastic spectators cheering on the mighty men and women who take up the axe. The competition in Sydney, long regarded as the Wimbledon of Woodchop, attracts competitors from across Australia and the globe, all eager to prove themselves as the woodchips fly! Woodchopping More than just a competition of speed in cutting through a log of wood with an axe, it’s a blockbusting crowd pleaser! Sawing Single-handed or double-handed, technique is every bit as important as fitness and strength in a sawing competition. Sharpening saws and relationships, the Jack & Jill Sawing often has a husband and wife on each end of the saw! Endurance Back by popular demand, the ‘triathlon of woodchop’ event will make its grand return in 2023. Individuals will race in a test of endurance – facing a 375mm single hand saw, a 300mm underhand chop, and finishing up with a 300mm standing block chop in the Woodchop Stadium.

4) DISTRICT EXHIBIT DISPLAYS

In 1876, Show Societies across NSW were asked to mount displays of their produce, but it wasn’t until 1911 that the Perpetual Shield Award was first presented in this competition. In 1950 the five distinct districts were finalised and continue to be Southern, Northern, Western, Central NSW and Southeast Queensland. 2023 is the first year since the 2019 Covid Travel Restrictions and subsequent years’ weather-related issues that the Southeast Queensland District has been able to be return. Welcome back! Each District (also known as a Court), is judged on the overall originality of their display design, while each individual element within the display is also judged. Everything from grasses and grains, to fruit, cheese and even eggs—every element is under scrutiny. A win here is considered ultimate bragging rights!
