Melbourne will come to life with White Night Reimagined, as the city's flagship creative event returns, transformed, for its seventh year.
White Night Reimagined will mesmerise after dark revellers like never before, taking over Carlton Gardens, Treasury Gardens and Birrarung Marr for three consecutive nights, from the 22nd to 24th of August.
White Night has always been a celebration of Melbourne’s late-night culture, a city known for our exciting live music, food and drink, entertainment and creative cultural experiences that never stop, and this year the event will prominently feature art, performance, food and music.
The program for White Night Reimagined Melbourne was launched with the promise of transforming the city into a cultural mecca, in the heart of winter.
Taking inspiration from Melbourne’s gardens, White Night Reimagined Artistic Director, David Atkins has once again prepared a luminous program of creative experiences for Melbourne’s after dark crowd, with many of the pieces either on display for the first time in Australia or created exclusively for White Night Reimagined.
Each garden will be transformed into its own realm as artists from across the Melbourne and across the globe will take visitors on journeys mythological, mysterious and mesmerising. Birrarung Marr will become The Physical Realm, Treasury Gardens will become The Sensory Realm and Carlton Gardens will become The Spiritual Realm.
Program Highlights include:
- The projections and video mapping installations Melbourne has come to know and love will return in 2019, across iconic Melbourne buildings including the façades of the Old Treasury Building and the Department of Education.
- The façade of the NGV will once again feature a captivating projection, in partnership with Department of Premier and Cabinet’s Deadly Questions campaign. This work features the voices of Aboriginal Victorians and will showcase the artwork of award-winning artist and Wathaurung (Wadawarrung) Elder, Marlene Gilson – Land Lost, Land Stolen, Treaty.
- Debuting for the first time in Australia, The Globe will bring circus, acrobatics, musicians, dance and more to Birrarung Marr in an imposing creative installation.
- The Giant Cocoon, created with over 1000 precisely positioned programmable lights, held together in a floating parabolic suspension of woven ropes. The interactive piece at Treasury Gardens encourages dwellers to wander inside, move freely and become one with the work.
- Melbourne’s Puppeteer Joe Blanck is creating a new work in 2019, The Guardian of the Spiritual Realm, an impressive 5m high x 10m wide, nose to tail, puppet that will roam Carlton Gardens.
- One of Australia’s most iconic stories will come to life at the Royal Exhibition Building, with projection mapping, music, and live performance, with the full details to be revealed closer to the event.
There’s never a better time to experience Melbourne’s iconic after dark culture, with many of the city’s iconic cultural institutions opening to the public throughout the night. Special programming and exclusive installations will run throughout the National Gallery of Victoria, State Library Victoria, and Melbourne Museum. The Arts Centre’s biannual Supersense festival will this year run as part of the White Night Reimagined program, with a collaborative experience – Superdrone – running on the Saturday night.
Those in search of a late-night winter affair will be enthralled by the music program to be announced in July, while those needing a reprieve from the wintery night will find comfort in many of the city’s favourite restaurants, with a Melbourne Food & Wine Festival collaboration to be unveiled soon.
White Night Artistic Director and Executive Producer David Atkins commented that this year’s program holds a special place in his heart; “this Reimagined White Night, and the final White Night for me, is going to be special for both reasons. It’s been an exciting challenge re-conceiving the event over three nights in winter. The Gardens provide us unique programming opportunities and 2019 is filled with premieres and Australian firsts featuring a selection of local national and international Artists showcasing their work.”

How attendees experience White Night Reimagined will be up to each visitor to design their own adventure. Venture to all three realms on a single night or take an entire evening to discover one precinct. The new White Night Reimagined format gives families the opportunity to enjoy the illuminations earlier while spreading the crowd over three nights will ease congestion and make it a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
