Flour Drum - all-day eatery renowned for its creative flair and treasure trove of house baked sweet treats

Flour Drum
Hidden just a stone’s throw away from the ever popular, hipster Main street of Newtown in Sydney’s inner west, lies a quaint café worthy of the short walk from the train station or bustling main street. Celebrating it’s 4th birthday, ‘Flour Drum’ provides the perfect setting for a morning coffee, lazy brunch, business meeting or even dinner and drinks.

My first impression was that of a sense of home, that I was back in the country where I grew up amongst the trees and wildlife. This feeling was catalysed by the style of décor and impressive large murals on the walls depicting Australian native wildlife and outback scenes. I was immediately ready for some ‘bush tucker’- however the food to come was on a much higher scale!

The coffee was perfectly roasted and prepared, brought by friendly welcoming staff who looked after our every need. The All day Breakfast/lunch menu provided so many delicious options that it was difficult to make a final decision! In the end we enjoyed an array of breakfast and lunch dishes which were all extremely satisfying, well presented and of impressive quality and taste.

‘Big Drum Breakfast’
The ‘Big Drum Breakfast’ was certainly as the name implies, with a large plate of poached eggs, smoked belly bacon so thick and juicy I didn’t want it to end, house-made hickory-smoked baked beans, pork sausage, kale and sourdough. I opted to add avocado also but it definitely wasn’t a necessity for portion size!

fresh herb fritters
Corn off the cob and fresh herb fritters with Bulgarian feta, avocado and mint were paired with a poached egg and house-made tomato jam, providing the perfect ingredients for a fresh, healthy option that tasted delicious.

buttermilk pancake stack
The banoffee buttermilk pancake stack was certainly a crowd favourite, both due to the colourful presentation and delicious sweet combinations. An impressive pancake stack topped with grilled caramelised bananas, dulche de leche, whipped pure cream and mascarpone, toasted Anzac biscuit crumbles and maple syrup, it’s a treat worth indulging in!

lamb fettucine dish
Finally we finished off with an amazing lamb fettucine dish, so tender and bursting with flavour. House-made fettucine is topped with 8 hour slow-braised South Australian lamb shank ragu, shallot and chili infused olive oil and Cyprian volcanic black sea salt. I could eat this every day and my tastebuds would be so happy! If the dinner menu is anything to compare, I have no doubt it would also be delectable.
