The spectacular Sydney Chinese New Year 2015 program will come to life this evening, with everyone invited to attend the official launch from 7pm at Dawes Point.
The highly anticipated Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors will light up for the first time, featuring 90 Chinese warriors each standing 2.1 metres tall. Families can also witness lions leaping to the sound of cymbals, drums and firecrackers as well as an official eye-dotting ceremony, to mark the beginning of the program which runs from 13 February to 1 March.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said: “Huge crowds will celebrate Chinese New Year in Sydney, with over 75 events on the festival agenda to welcome the Year of the Sheep.”
“We are delighted to host the Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors, which are in Australia for the first time. This unique exhibition will encourage even more Sydneysiders to experience the excitement of this year’s Chinese New Year festival.”
Those interested in hearing about the creation process for the Lanterns of the Terracotta Warriors can register to attend an artist’s presentation by Xia Nan on Saturday 14 February at the China Cultural Centre in Sydney. Xia Nan created the warrior lanterns for the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, and this is the first time they have been shown outside China and the United Kingdom.
Other highlights of the festival include the Twilight Parade, Luna Streets offering a feast of Asian food in the heart of Haymarket, and Dragon Boat Races at Darling Harbour.
