Now that you have been given your new identification, it is time for a tour of the ship. You will arrive into the first class hallway where the upper class passengers bunked. This is the true “red carpet” experience. A long carpet lines the floor with a special red carpet leading to every room. The hall shines bright with lights on the walls in between every room and also on the ceiling. Railings are provided on the walls to help stabilize passengers as the ship sways in the sea.
After experiencing the overseas “life of luxury,” it is time to see the other side of life on the ship. The Titanic was the first of its kind to have a third class with mostly private rooms equipped with mattresses. Unlike the first hallway, this one is dark and desolate. No lights hang on the ceiling, but rather dim and dark lights are hung only on one wall. The floor is covered with hard cement rather than luxurious carpet. Noise and commotion surround the walls as you walk down the hall and move towards the bottom of the ship.
You are then lead to a lifeboat-shaped bench to listen to one of the actors tell stories of how people escaped the ship. A large screen drapes the lifeboat and you are put in the scenario of the ship sinking. The water was 28 degrees Fahrenheit and you hear frantic screaming from all around. The screams then turn to silence as the Titanic sinks.
Now it is time to see who hasurvived the wreck as you are escorted into a room with a list of all the members aboard the Titanic. The names are organized by class and who survived. This is where you will search for the name on your passport to see if you survived the wreck. Only 705 passengers were saved while 1,523 were lost at sea. If you were a third class passenger or an on staff member, then you had little to no chance of being saved.
The actors are helpful and devoted to teaching you everything you would like to know about the Titanic. This is not simply a tour of the Titanic, but a full experience. Artifacts that have been retrieved from the bottom of the ocean are on display to make your journey as real as possible. Step in the shoes of a Titanic passenger and see if you survived the shipwreck 102 years ago.
