The most comprehensive exhibition of pop art to be seen in Australia, Pop to popism, opens this weekend at the Art Gallery of New South Wales as part of the Sydney International Art Series 2014-2015.
Developed by Destination NSW, Sydney International Art Series is an annual event comprising hallmark exhibitions at both the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia.
Pop to popism, opening from Saturday 1 November 2014 to Sunday 1 March 2015, will consume an entire floor of Sydney’s famous creative cloister, with pieces from the giants of the pop art genre.
Visitors will have the opportunity to see many famous works, including Andy Warhol’s portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Jackie Kennedy, and Elizabeth Taylor; Roy Lichtenstein’s iconic comic-style paintings; David Hockney’s swimming pools; and Brett Whiteley’s massive 22 metre The American Dream.
Destination NSW Chief Executive Officer, Sandra Chipchase, said: “Securing outstanding exhibitions like Pop to popism through Sydney International Art Series not only enriches the cultural fabric of NSW, but also enhances our global city’s reputation as Australia’s cultural tourism hub.
“Since 2010, more than one million people have attended the Sydney International Art Series exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. Around 100,000 of these visitors were from interstate and overseas, coming specifically to Sydney for the Sydney International Art Series, and generating more than $80 million in overnight visitor expenditure,” she said.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia will open the doors to its Sydney International Art Series exhibition, Chuck Close – Prints, Process and Collaboration on Thursday 20 November 2014.
