Hottest 100 Experiences in the World Revealed

  • Africa is #1 but South America surprises
  • It's true, Australians are adventurers!
  • Fancy a trek to see the Mountain Gorilla, it's #3
  • Nominations from Australian travellers, judged by panel of 10 experts
  • The must-have bucket list of travel experiences in the world

“The scenery in deepest, breeziest Patagonia is so breath-snatchingly beautiful, it almost appears to have been computer-generated. The Torres del Paine National Park (#2) is one of the most incredible places I've ever hiked through” – Steve McKenna (judge)

Australia's best-selling outbound travel magazine, International Traveller, reveals the 100 Ultimate Travel Experiences of a Lifetime special collectors' edition of the magazine, on sale September 4, supported by Expedia.com.au.

A panel of 10 travel experts, among them Lonely Planet's Richard I'Anson, Sally Webb and award-winning travel writers John Borthwick and Andrew Bain, dutifully spent hours analysing nominations from globe-trotting Australians to reveal this sacred list of the top 100 travel experiences you must have on your bucket list.

It includes some surprises.

"It's probably no surprise that the top bucket list experience is an epic African Safari - who wouldn't want to see the big five in their natural habitat?”, says editorial director Leigh-Ann Pow, “What did surprise me is how many South American destinations there are, especially in The Andes. It proves that Australians really are intrepid travellers and will sit on a plane for how ever long it takes to get to somewhere that interests them. It was also great to see that we like to go beyond a tourist experience - hiring a Villa in Tuscany was a popular option, something that allows us to live like a local."

The panels' choices are backed by recent research by Expedia, which shows that having an amazing animal encounter and visiting one or more of the Seven Wonders of the World, ranks high on the bucket list of over 45% of Australians. “At Expedia our job is to help more people get out there and experience our incredible world, which is why we are so proud to support International Traveller's 100 Ultimate Experiences,” explains Louise Crompton, Expedia Australia Marketing Director. “As one of the world's largest online travel companies we bring everything out there together, all in the one place to make it easy for Australians to start achieving their bucket list life experiences”.

This issue is on sale from Thursday, 4 September, 2014.

The 100 Ultimate Travel Experiences in the World app for iPad includes extra insider travel tips and images and is available for download from the App Store from mid-September.
