Spring Carnival Time at Royal Randwick

Sydney is recognised as one of the world’s truly great cities – now it has one of the world’s best thoroughbred horseracing tracks, and spectator and corporate facilities, to match.

The recently redeveloped Royal Randwick racecourse is up and running after the successful opening of its new multi-million dollar grandstand and spectacular, Theatre of the Horse. And all who have visited from around Sydney, the nation and internationally have one way to describe it – world class.

The grandstand has been built with not only a vision for the next 50 years, but also as a facility that can used seven days a week for a variety of private, corporate and gala events.

Royal Randwick is not only just five minutes from the CBD, it is also less than 10km from Sydney’s International Airport at Mascot.

Inside the five-level grandstand is the exclusive and luxurious Chairman’s Club, which allows its members and their guests to dine and enjoy the races in the finest of style.

Along with the Grandview Room – a premium space, which caters for ATC members and their guests – Level 1 of the new grandstand is actually Sydney’s biggest restaurant, able to sit up to 700 a people with the highest quality in food and service.

Level 2 houses a ballroom able to hold functions from as little as 100 people up to 1,100, thanks to its modern design system, which can convert into all types of space.

It offers not only glass frontage onto the racecourse, but also unique views back over Centennial Park and the majestic Sydney CBD skyline.

But perhaps the most exciting part of the grandstand is a first for an Australian race club – if not the world – in a joint venture deal with one of Sydney’s biggest hospitality groups, Keystone.

The partnership will offer another exclusive membership to The Stables Sydney – a business and dining centre eventually open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The space will allow time for business networking and partnerships, as well as a space for relaxation. And up this high, views across all of Sydney, including the world-famous Harbour Bridge.

All of this at the same time that some of Australia’s biggest and most famous horseraces will be held within the next few weeks at Royal Randwick.

On 5 October, the Group 1 The Star Epsom, held over the famous Royal Randwick mile, will be fought out by some of the country’s best horses, while the Group 1 McGrath Metropolitan not only brings great prestige but also an important lead-up to the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes Day on 12 October will feature some of the best staying three-year-olds striving for more Group 1 glory, plus the State Finals of Myer Fashions on the Field with over $50,000 in prizes on offer.

And for the race that stops a nation – Melbourne Cup Day on 5 November – Royal Randwick will again be in full swing with huge crowds anticipated to enjoy the local racing plus all the action from Flemington broadcast live on the impressive superscreen – the biggest outdoor screen in the Southern Hemisphere.

Special marquees to cater for members, increased public dining and bar areas and added entertainment will be provided across all days to celebrate one of Sydney’s most popular events.

Australian Turf Club Chief Executive Darren Pearce said the Royal Randwick redevelopment had quickly become a new Sydney landmark, which would offer benefits to not only the local economy but also to the domestic and international tourism markets.

“Royal Randwick has always been an iconic destination and now we are helping to put Sydney on the map not only for our racing but also our ability to host any type of event,’’ Mr Pearce said.
