$2.5 MILLION CAMPAIGN PUTS SPOTLIGHT ON GREATER SYDNEY

Greater Sydney is the star of an omnichannel $2.5 million tourism campaign inviting residents to fall in love with their city again and give local businesses a much-needed boost.

Destination NSW’s Sydney Love It Like You Mean It campaign, which kicked off the NSW Government’s CBD revitalisation program late last year, is an invitation to Sydneysiders to enjoy a rejuvenating staycation or a fun-filled day or night out to see a musical, a live performance or an exhibition; to shop, dine or visit one of the many attractions.

The campaign is now in market, including a new television commercial that debuted during the Australian Open broadcast at the weekend. The full campaign schedule includes radio, billboards, digital and social advertising and features a diverse mix of experiences and attractions right across Greater Sydney.

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government was committed to restoring vibrancy to Greater Sydney and helping businesses impacted by COVID-19 quickly get back on track.

“The more Sydneysiders who book a multi-day staycation in the city, or get out and enjoy a meal, a performance, indulge in retail therapy or visit the many attractions, the faster business confidence will be restored, as those tills start ringing again,” Minister Ayres said.

In a first for this Sydney campaign, the second wave of marketing activity will also include content released in Cantonese, Mandarin and Arabic to appeal to a wider audience through these community languages.

The first burst of the campaign in late 2020 directly generated more than 42,000 leads to Sydney business websites.

Japan cities to be deprived of economic gains from Tokyo Olympics amid COVID-19 resurgence

The resurgence of COVID-19 cases across Japan in the winter season and the delay in the mass inoculation process are likely to reduce the gains expected for the local economies during Tokyo Olympics, thereby delay the economic recovery of Japanese cities in 2021, according to GlobalData, a leading data and analytics company.

Since the beginning of January 2021, COVID-19 cases started rising rapidly in Japan. The five prefectures Tokyo, Osaka, Aichi, Fukuoka and Shizuoka together accounted for around 50% of the total confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country. Tokyo accounted for around 25% of total cases in the country.

To contain the spread, the government declared state of emergency since 7 January 2021 in Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba and further expanded to seven more prefectures. Although, the move resulted in a quick reduction in the number of daily new cases, the medical system has been overburdened with rising cases of hospitalization. The restriction was further extended till 7 March across 10 prefectures, including Tokyo.

On the other hand, the mass inoculation process in Japan is delayed and the country is lagging far behind its peers such as the US, the UK, China and Russia in terms of vaccine development and insists on domestic clinical trials on procured vaccines.

Against this backdrop, GlobalData has revised downwards the growth forecast of Japanese cities on 15 January 2021 compared with 9 December 2020 underscoring the impact from the resurgence of COVID-19 cases. A substantial decrease in demand in face-to-face services industries including the tourism and hospitality sector is likely to exert strong downward pressure on the growth.

Tokyo, the main venue of Olympics games, was set to attract a total of 25 million tourists in 2020 as part of initial tourist target by Tokyo Municipal government. To boost the tourism sector, the government launched ‘Go to Travel’ campaign since July 2020 to stimulate domestic tourism. As of December 2020, Japan pledged to boost the tourism sector with inbound tourism during Olympic Games.

Anuradha Amarendra Joshi, Economic Research Analyst at GlobalData, comments: “Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics 2020 are postponed to July 2021. The resurgence of cases made the government to suspend the domestic tourism promotional scheme and rethink over the plan to welcome foreign tourists while assessing the risk.”

The Olympic Committee along with the Japanese Government and Tokyo Municipal Government is committed to hosting the games amid the rising public concerns.

Ms Joshi concludes: “Growing new cases are a key concern for Japan. Tokyo metropolitan government should adopt stringent measures to reduce the number of daily cases drastically and conduct the games safely.”

Australia's first Hotel Indigo opening in Adelaide on 1 March 2021

IHG Hotels & Resorts' boutique lifestyle brand, Hotel Indigo, will debut in Australia with the opening of Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets on 1 March. The much-anticipated 145-room hotel with its intriguing design features, deep connections to the neighbourhood and exemplary culinary offerings is set to become a vibrant cultural hub for locals and visitors, a hallmark of other Hotel Indigo properties around the world.

Located next to the lively Adelaide Central Market, the hotel will champion local producers in its two restaurants - Market & Meander Eatery and Bar, as well as rooftop raw food bar, Merrymaker which will be the highest rooftop bar in Adelaide.

Housed on the site of a former textile factory, the property's “Raw and Refined” design ethos will celebrate the neighbourhood's commercial past with an exciting blend of heritage-listed and modern architecture as well as eye-catching contemporary design features.

The hotel's public spaces will feature striking brick archways mimicking those in Adelaide Central Market, colourful street art-inspired murals by acclaimed Australian collage artists including Tristan Kerr and an exposed terracotta brick feature wall etched with intriguing neighbourhood references such as “Six o'clock Swill” and “Mad March” – the name given to Festival month in the city.

Continuing that cultural tribute, exclusive Adelaide Festival-inspired poster art will adorn corridors and rooms, while a rotating selection of artworks will create an engaging, ever-changing backdrop in public spaces.

“Hotel Indigo has paved its way across the globe as a truly fascinating brand designed to draw inspiration and spark curiosity from the roots of its surrounding neighbourhoods. With our ideal location right next door to the iconic Adelaide Central Market and near the newly renovated Her Majesty's Theatre, Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets will be the perfect escape for visitors and locals looking for a new way to connect with Adelaide” said General Manager, Thomas Zinn.

Inspiring local design

Just as no two neighbourhoods are alike, no two Hotel Indigos are the same. The hotel's 145 oversized rooms and suites will all feature unique design touches, drawing on local neighbourhood cues.

These will include copper fixtures - a nod to South Australia's copper mining heritage, contemporary light wood furnishings and colourful rugs depicting the distinctive tessellated tile pattern often used in traditional Adelaide homes. Bathrooms will have modern two-head rainfall showers and premium Biology bath amenities, supporting the hotel's green ethos with large-format bottles and environmentally friendly packaging.

Bedheads will be emblazoned with eye-catching Festival-inspired murals while floor-to-ceiling windows will provide majestic views over the city toward the Adelaide Hills and all rooms will contain local touchpoints such as teas by local supplier T Bar.

The hotel's 25 suites will feature luxurious king size beds, espresso machines and minibars featuring locally sourced items including a pre-batched Wattleseed Negroni from Lot 100 in the Adelaide Hills, Floral as Hell Gin by local distiller, Blend Etiquette and the delicious Inch Licorice Block by Adelaide-based Melba's Chocolates.

Eighteen premium suites will also have balconies, a true rarity in the city.

Location, location, location

Much like their counterparts around the world, Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets is perfectly positioned in a culturally-rich neighbourhood. Located in the heart of Adelaide's vibrant market precinct, this hotel is a gateway through which to discover the city's most inspiring stories.

The hotel is located just steps from the bountiful fresh local produce and colourful characters at Adelaide Central Market, with other nearby attractions including Chinatown, with its host of authentic Asian eateries, and the multicultural gourmet thoroughfares of Grote and Gouger Streets, where you can find everything from authentic Japanese yakitori to chargrilled Argentinian-style steaks.

In addition to fantastic food options, the neighbourhood's laneways are lined with inviting bars to catch a pre-dinner drink including retro chic cocktail bar Lotus Lounge, craft brew specialist 55ml and small-batch gin distiller Prohibition Liquor Co.

The hotel is also walking distance from many of the city's big-ticket attractions including Rundle Mall, Adelaide Botanic Garden, Adelaide Oval, Adelaide Zoo and Art Gallery of South Australia. It also has convenient transport access with a free CBD tram stop nearby.

Locally-loved destination dining

Inspired culinary experiences build on the brand's legacy of restaurants that become neighbourhood favourites. Guests at Hotel Indigo Adelaide Markets will discover menus that showcase the meal's provenance, with a focus on all things local.

As the city's highest rooftop bar, Merrymaker will offer a mesmerising panorama of the CBD and Adelaide Hills from its 16th-floor vantage point. Utilising the freshest regional produce - think organic oysters from Coffin Bay and cured meats from Adelaide Central Market – the raw food-focused venue will offer a mouth-watering selection of local seafood, charcuterie and cheeses prepared in an open kitchen. Guests will be able to enjoy more than 25 award-winning gins plus a wide range of South Australian wines and craft beers.

Market & Meander will be a ground-floor all-day dining venue that champions local produce while honouring the district's multicultural influences. Signature dishes will include slow-cooked smoked brisket and delicious free-range chicken prepared on an authentic South American-style parrilla grill. The drinks menu will showcase South Australia's enviable range of wines and craft beers, including a bespoke beer created by Goodieson Brewery in McLaren Vale.

Guests will also enjoy the local design touches found in this bar and eatery with its colour scheme inspired by long-serving South Australian premier Don Dunstan, who was famous for his social advocacy and flamboyant pink shorts.

The local focus doesn't end with the food. The venue will utilise hand-crafted crockery and glassware by Adelaide-based Caslake and Pedler Glass, plus artisan knives forged from recycled materials by Dog Boy Knives in Brompton.

Overseeing both restaurants will be 35-year-old Italian chef Gabriele Pezzimenti, who honed his skills at three Michelin-starred Da Vittorio in his home-town Bergamo, Italy before working at high-profile venues in the USA, Spain and Dubai.

Fitness and functions

In addition to a well-equipped 24/7 fitness centre, the property will have a 13m outdoor infinity pool, two boardroom-style meeting rooms and the option to hold events on the mezzanine level and rooftop.

King Standard rooms start from $250.00 per night.

Rugby, history, and movie magic – there is something for everyone as New Zealand launches three exciting new experiences for 2021, set to inspire the wanderlust in any land-bound traveller.

Want to stand amongst rugby legends, walk alongside New Zealand's first discoverer, or get lost in the fantastical world of cinematic magic? While we await borders to reopen, here are three more reasons why travellers should put New Zealand on their travel bucket list.

All Blacks Experience: Pay homage to the world's rugby legends

What's a trip to New Zealand without diving deep into the world of rugby – the sport that locals live and breathe? The All Blacks Experience, located at Auckland's SkyCity, is now open to visitors who have always wondered what it takes to be the greatest rugby players in the world.

Featuring four interactive hands-on zones, visitors can test their rugby skills and discover if they are born to kick, pass and train like the legends of the All Blacks, Blacks Ferns, and others who wore the reputable black jersey.

For rugby fans who've always wondered how it feels to be on the receiving end of the iconic Haka, watching the All Blacks perform right before your eyes is the ultimate way to feel the passion of these rugby greats and appreciate the role that this traditional war dance plays in mentally and physically preparing the team as they go into battle on the rugby field.

Manea Footprints of Kupe: Explore the history of Aotearoa

Twenty years in the making, Manea Footprints of Kupe, an interactive Cultural, Heritage, Tourism and Education Centre has opened its doors to welcome visitors on its grounds.

Visitors to the attraction, housed in Opononi, Hokianga, also known as the cradle of Māori nationhood, can immerse themselves in the history of New Zealand or Aotearoa. Hokianga is also the place Kupe, the country's first discoverer, called home for four decades. Manea aims to preserve, communicate, and celebrate Kupe's journeys across New Zealand, his departure and capture the Māori story.

Through a 75-minute interactive guided tour led by Kupe's descendants, history-lovers will be exposed to an authentic cultural engagement that includes protocols, pōwhiri (welcome ceremony), storytelling, waiata (song) and karakia (prayers).

A 20-minute 4D movie and live theatre performance that bring to life Kupe's epic journeys serve as the icing on the cake, wrapping up a journey of culture and history, leaving travellers with a deeper connection and understanding of a large part of New Zealand history.

Weta Workshop Unleashed: Explore film-making and celebrate creativity

Weta Workshop Unleashed is a visual feast that invites guests of all ages to step into a fantastical film effects facility, inspired by Wellington's Academy Award-winning Weta Workshop.

Located at Federal Street in Auckland, this attraction is not for the faint-hearted – visitors should be ready to be blown away by resident creatures, one hyper-realistic giant and a galactic robot.

A 90-minute guided tour led by the Unleashed crew promises to take visitors out of this world, and into the worlds of three original movie projects of the horror, sci-fi and fantasy genres. One blink and they might miss surprise encounters and jaw-dropping environments.

NSW PUMPS-UP THE VOLUME WITH PACKAGE TO SUPPORT ACCOMMODATION, LIVE MUSIC AND EVENTS

Up to 200,000 accommodation vouchers worth $100 each will be available to NSW residents as part of a new $51.5 million economic package designed to encourage people back into the Sydney CBD, re-ignite live music across the State, and support jobs in the accommodation, entertainment and tourism sectors.

The NSW Government’s latest COVID-19 response package will also include $24 million for eligible live music venues, a support package to help the business events industry in Sydney and regional NSW, and a funding boost for tourism marketing.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the new package recognised the Sydney CBD and workers in accommodation, live entertainment and tourism industries had been especially hard hit by COVID-19.

“With international, interstate and business travellers virtually non-existent for the past year, the CBD, and in particular the accommodation industry, has done it tough,” Ms Berejiklian said.

Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres said supporting the live music and business events industry was vital as NSW continued its economic recovery.

“Everyone has missed live music, the industry is coming out of hibernation, and this package will ensure our much loved venues are there to host the gigs people want to see as they celebrate NSW emerging from the pandemic.

“There will also be support for business events and more money to market local tourism attractions as part of the Love NSW platform.

“Our success in containing COVID-19 means we can now focus on assisting these vital industries get back to business,” Mr Ayres said.

The key components of the program are:
  • $20 million for up to 200,000 x $100 CBD accommodation vouchers
  • $24 million to Destination NSW for a Live Music Support Package to be administered in partnership with Create NSW and the Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner
  • $5.5 million for a Business Events Industry Support package to assist businesses in Greater Sydney and across NSW administered by Destination NSW in partnership with BESydney
  • $2 million for a Tourism Industry Marketing Support package through Destination NSW’s Love NSW campaign.

The $100 accommodation vouchers will be allocated on a first-in, first-served basis, and is expected to commence in June during the quieter winter period.

Industry has welcomed the announcement, commending the NSW Government for the targeted and timely measures that will help businesses hardest hit by the pandemic.

Business Sydney Executive Director Katherine O’Reagan said: “Sydney is the jewel in the nation’s tourism crown and with nearly a quarter of businesses in the city impacted by COVID, the accommodation sector is amongst the worst hit due to the loss of domestic and international visitors, so this stimulus package will save jobs and boost the whole CBD economy.”

Australian Hotels Association Director of Liquor and Policing John Green said: “The end of JobKeeper will be another blow, so today’s State Government announcement is perfectly timed - it allows hotels to retain more staff knowing bookings are on the horizon once again.”

APRA AMCOS CEO Dean Ormston said: “The risk for NSW without this package was not only the loss of valuable cultural infrastructure but also thousands of jobs that are supported by live music across the hospitality and tourism industries.”

More information about the package will be made available at NSW.gov.au soon.

$16.5 MILLION FOR MORE GREEN SPACE

Greater Sydney will reap the benefits of more quality green public space thanks to the NSW Government’s COVID-19 Stimulus Package.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the new Greater Sydney Crown Land Open Space Activation Program would fund upgrades to Crown land and community facilities.

“The last 12 months has taught us the importance of green open space and creating public places where people can safely meet, congregate and relax.

“It makes good sense that by improving Crown land and public infrastructure we can make better use of the assets we already have to create more open space for the community to enjoy.

“These projects will also support local jobs and economies with work for tradespeople and materials suppliers,” Mr Stokes said.

In addition to the funding, Crown land will be reviewed to identify sites for future activation. Local councils will be invited to participate in partnership opportunities for activation and ongoing management of shortlisted sites for activation.

An additional $500,000 over the next two years will be used to protect sensitive nature reserves being impacted by unauthorised activities such as four-wheel driving, dirt bike riding and rubbish dumping.

The projects are among a range of stimulus initiatives being funded on Crown land sites across Greater Sydney.

Graphics, Animation, Art, and Technology Convention to be held in Sydney in 2023

SIGGRAPH Asia has announced Sydney to be the host city for its 2023 conference and exhibition, bringing together the world’s most respected technical and creative minds, and further building New South Wales’ position as a leading global knowledge hub for creative industries.

Widely recognised as the premier platform for the advancement of graphics, animation, art, and technology, the 2023/16th edition of SIGGRAPH Asia taking place from 12 – 15 December 2023, is expected to attract over 2,500 delegates to Sydney and thousands of visitors to the exhibition showcase, sharing expert knowledge on research, science, art, animation, gaming, interactivity, education, and emerging technologies.

Global bidding services specialist BESydney secured this important gathering in partnership with the Australasian ACM SIGGRAPH Asia community and in coordination with trade fair organiser, Koelnmesse Pte Ltd.

Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres, said: “New South Wales has the largest creative sector in Australia, and we expect the sector to be a key driver of the state's economic growth, exports and innovation over the next decade.

“Sydney is one of the world’s most creative cities and it’s great to see this latest win for the business events sector, which continues to play a key role in restarting our city and state’s economy as global communities reopen.”

NSW is home to 40% of Australia’s creative businesses, almost half of the creative workforce, and generates up to 70% of the country’s total creative exports. It also has a dedicated Creative Industries Knowledge Hub through the NSW Government Department of Industry.

SIGGRAPH Asia Chief Staff Executive, Prakash Ramajillu, said: “Sydney’s selection is a testament to the depth of the city’s creative sector and its world-class venue in the ICC Sydney.

“Sydney as the host city for 2023 is an exciting prospect for SIGGRAPH Asia and we look forward to further building on the foundations set by the various communities. We’re pleased to return to Australia’s thriving technology, creative industries and media scene, with so many new developments in this field since we were last here in 2019.

“The SIGGRAPH Asia Conference Advisory Group and Koelnmesse Pte Ltd are very thankful for the support that Team Sydney has given us so far. We hope to continue working together to create and execute a true world class event that will leave a strong impact in the thriving technology, creative industries, media and film sectors in the state of New South Wales and in Australia.”

BESydney CEO Lyn Lewis-Smith said the organisation had secured 20 new meetings for Sydney in the last 12 months across technology, health, science and infrastructure which are expected to bring in almost 13,820 delegates staying 58,490 delegate days and generating an estimated $51 million for the local economy, under the most challenging conditions on record for the business events industry.

Ms. Lewis-Smith said: “The desire to meet face to face is getting stronger the longer people’s business activities are confined to Zoom, and this is another positive milestone towards the market’s return.

“Sound management of the pandemic across our city and state is giving increasing confidence to our local and global clientele to choose Sydney for their next meeting. I’m so proud of the efforts of my team and our Team Sydney industry partners, and the close collaboration to ensure Sydney continues to win business events that will secure global attention and business to further our innovation and leadership in this growing sector.

“In 2019, Sydney returned to the global Top 20 host cities, and international events like SIGGRAPH Asia prove the pulling power of Sydney as a global meeting destination,” said Ms. Lewis-Smith.

The event will deliver a robust conference program, including renowned keynotes, panel sessions, technical talks, a computer animation festival, and specialised exhibition for the latest products and services for computer graphics and interactive techniques professionals and enthusiasts from Asia and beyond. There will also be exclusive tours for delegates to visit research centres and industry hubs, networking opportunities onsite and at co-located events, and a student program in partnership with NSW Stem Industry School Partnerships, further building Sydney’s strengths as a global knowledge hub in creative technology.

The event will also focus on sharing content with creative industries students across NSW, with June Kim appointed as the SIGGRAPH Asia 2023 Conference Chair. Ms. Kim is a lecturer at the University of NSW (UNSW), who has also served and participated in ACM SIGGRAPH for over a decade.

“Engaging the next generation is critical to the ongoing success for our community. Globally, there is a need to increase participation of youths, women, first peoples and people from diverse backgrounds, to study and develop skills in science, technology, engineering, arts, and design. Hosting SIGGRAPH Asia in Sydney will also provide the platform to launch new initiatives which help to scale and grow the local industry and spark interest amongst new audiences in this part of the world,” shared Ms. Kim.

UNSW Head of School, Professor Edward Scheer, said: “UNSW Art and Design has a long history of creative research dating back to 1833. But we also remember the future and we continue to develop new areas of research in 3D visualisation, visual effects, simulation and immersive design through our labs. We are proud to be partners in SIGGRAPH Asia 2023 and look forward to seeing you in Sydney."

SIGGRAPH Asia 2023 was secured for Australia with support from Tourism Australia’s Business Events Bid Fund Program and the NSW Government.

Tourism Australia Managing Director Phillipa Harrison said that attracting large-scale events such as this are a mark of confidence to the world that Sydney and Australia are ready to welcome business visitors back and play a major role in kickstarting the visitor economy as the industry rebuilds.

“The business events sector is a significant economic driver and securing large-scale international events for future years will significantly support the recovery of our tourism industry and economy more broadly by filling venues, hotels and restaurants around the country,” Ms. Harrison said.

“Sydney is a world-renowned events destination and being home to so many incredible tourism offerings as well, I have no doubt it will provide the perfect setting for the 2023 SIGGRAPH Asia event.”
