Laos Recognized Ho Chi Minh Trail Sites as National Heritage

Honoring a Shared Legacy

On August 22, 2025, Laos officially recognized the Phou Luang–Ho Chi Minh Trail sites as national heritage, marking a significant step in preserving the region’s shared history with Vietnam. The ceremony, held at the General Club of the Ministry of National Defense in Vientiane, highlighted the importance of these sites as symbols of resilience, cooperation, and unity during the Indochina wars.

Deputy Minister of Defense Vongsone Inpanphim addressed the gathering, presenting the findings of a joint Lao–Vietnamese survey conducted since late 2023. The survey traced the historic route through Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, Savannakhet, Salavan, Sekong, Champasak, and Attapeu provinces, identifying 18 sites of historical and cultural importance.

Documenting the Ho Chi Minh Trail

The recognition followed extensive documentation efforts by both Laos and Vietnam. Vietnam published a book on the relics in Lao and Vietnamese, while Laos released 18 publications, including history books, photo albums, and detailed maps of the sites. These resources ensured that the legacy of the trail was preserved in written and visual form for future generations.

Officials emphasized that the Ho Chi Minh Trail was more than a military supply route. It served as a strategic stronghold and a powerful symbol of unity that supported the struggles of the Lao, Vietnamese, and Cambodian people. Its heritage designation reflected both its battlefield role and its enduring place in regional memory.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

The recognition of the sites resulted from a formal agreement between the governments of Laos and Vietnam. A joint committee, led by the Ministries of National Defense of both nations, was established to oversee the survey and preservation process. This collaborative effort began in 2023 and concluded in 2024, paving the way for the official listing of the trail sites as national heritage.

The recognition underscored the importance of cooperation between Laos and Vietnam in preserving their intertwined histories. It also ensured that the trail would be safeguarded as a cultural and historical treasure, reinforcing the bonds of friendship and solidarity between the two nations.
