A New Travel Trend Takes Root in Yunnan

Yunnan, China’s captivating province known for its year-round spring climate and breathtaking landscapes, is witnessing a major shift in tourism patterns. More travellers are choosing to stay longer and experience local life rather than rush through short sightseeing tours. According to data released on September 11 by the Domestic Tourism Market Joint Laboratory, established by the Yunnan Tourism Planning Institute and Hopegoo, the province has seen a remarkable rise in long-stay tourism — a trend redefining how people travel in China.

This summer, more than 45 percent of visitors to Yunnan stayed for at least five days — a jump of nine percentage points compared to last year. Online travel bookings soared by 136 percent, tourism product sales climbed 137 percent, and long-stay visitor numbers more than doubled. Spending by these visitors increased by an impressive 95 percent, while intercity travel and car-rental orders surged 167 percent.

A Diverse Mix of Travellers Discovering “An Ideal Life”

Out-of-province and inbound visitors made up 58 percent of all travellers to Yunnan, with Guangdong, Sichuan, Zhejiang, Guizhou, and Hunan leading as key source regions. The visitor demographic reflects Yunnan’s broad appeal — 35 percent were families with children, 28 percent were senior travellers, 22 percent were young creators and freelancers, and 15 percent joined educational tours.

Each group brings a unique approach to experiencing Yunnan. Families enjoy the province’s safe, culturally rich environments and outdoor adventures, while young freelancers are drawn to the relaxed lifestyle, creative energy, and affordability. The silver generation, in particular, has embraced Yunnan’s gentle pace and pleasant climate, favouring destinations like Pu’er and Baoshan for their wellness retreats, hot springs, and excellent medical facilities. Many also take part in local farm activities, integrating leisure with meaningful cultural engagement.

Living, Not Just Visiting

Unlike traditional tourism focused on ticking off attractions, long-stay visitors in Yunnan are embracing a “travel and reside” lifestyle. They rent local apartments, participate in community events, take short courses, or immerse themselves in slow travel — discovering Yunnan’s charm through its food, tea culture, festivals, and everyday rhythm.

According to Kunming Daily, residing in and discovering the beauty of Yunnan has become the new key to unlocking what locals call “an ideal life.” This shift highlights a growing global preference for slower, more meaningful travel that connects visitors deeply with place and people.

The Future of Sustainable Tourism in Yunnan

With its combination of natural beauty, cultural depth, and modern infrastructure, Yunnan is well positioned to lead China’s next wave of sustainable tourism. The rise in long-stay visits supports local economies more evenly, encourages cultural exchange, and reduces pressure on popular short-term hotspots. As more travellers choose to extend their stays, Yunnan is steadily transforming from a destination to a lifestyle — a place not just to see, but to truly live.
