Myanmar and China Strengthened Tourism and Trade Ties at the 22nd China-ASEAN Expo

A High-Level Meeting in Nanning

Myanmar’s Prime Minister U Nyo Saw, during his visit to Nanning in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region of the People’s Republic of China for the 22nd China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and the China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, held key discussions aimed at deepening cooperation between Myanmar and China. The Prime Minister met Mr Chen Gang, Secretary of the CPC Committee of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, at the Liyuan State Guesthouse in Nanning, where both leaders exchanged views on strengthening bilateral relations across multiple sectors.

Their discussions focused on expanding trade and investment between Myanmar and Guangxi, sharing advanced agricultural technologies, boosting tourism cooperation, and establishing sister-city relationships to encourage cultural and economic collaboration. The meeting underscored both nations’ commitment to building stronger regional partnerships and enhancing people-to-people connections through tourism and development initiatives.

Key Officials Attended the Diplomatic Talks

The meeting was attended by several senior Myanmar officials, including Union Ministers Dr Charlie Than, U Chit Swe, and Dr Thet Khaing Win, along with Kachin State Chief Minister U Khet Htein Nan, Deputy Minister Dr Zaw Myint, Myanmar Ambassador to China U Tin Maung Swe, and the Myanmar Consul-General in Nanning.

On the Chinese side, Secretary Chen Gang was joined by Governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Mr Wei Tao, Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Ms Ma Jia, and other high-ranking officials. The gathering highlighted the importance of collaborative leadership in promoting economic, technological, and cultural exchanges between Myanmar and China.

Tourism Cooperation Took Center Stage

Tourism played a central role in the discussions, with both sides recognizing the potential for stronger travel links between Myanmar and Guangxi. The leaders emphasized developing joint tourism programs, sharing best practices in eco-tourism and heritage preservation, and encouraging more cultural exchanges to attract travelers from across the ASEAN region.

By fostering tourism partnerships and establishing sister-city relationships, both parties aimed to showcase the natural beauty, cultural diversity, and hospitality of Myanmar and Guangxi. These initiatives were viewed as essential steps toward boosting regional tourism and supporting local communities through sustainable development.

A Diplomatic Evening of Friendship

Following the meeting, the Secretary of the CPC Committee of Guangxi hosted a formal dinner in honour of Prime Minister U Nyo Saw and his delegation at the Chinese Hibiscus Hall of Liyuan State Guesthouse. The evening celebrated the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect that has long characterized the relationship between Myanmar and China.

The event not only strengthened diplomatic bonds but also reaffirmed both nations’ shared vision of prosperity, cultural exchange, and sustainable tourism growth across the ASEAN region.
