Fresh Faces, Bold Vision: Sri Lanka Tourism Charts a New Course

Dheera Hettiarachchi
Industry Leaders Step In to Guide a Growing Sector

Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is entering a new era with the appointment of seasoned professionals to lead four of its key tourism organisations. These changes mark a pivotal moment for the country’s strategic development and international promotion as it continues its impressive recovery as a world-class destination.

At the helm of this transformation is Buddhika Hewawasam, a respected name in the aviation and travel industries. He now takes on the dual roles of Chairman at the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB). His deep experience and dynamic leadership are expected to bring a renewed global focus and operational strength to Sri Lanka’s growing tourism ambitions.

A Strategic Shift in Tourism Education and Events

In parallel, Dheera Hettiarachchi brings his tourism management expertise to two more vital institutions—stepping into the Chairman role at the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) and the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB). Formerly the Cluster Head for Travel and Tourism at SLITHM, Hettiarachchi is well-positioned to elevate the standards of hospitality training while strengthening the country’s appeal as a premier destination for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism.

His appointment is expected to energise tourism education and enhance Sri Lanka’s capacity to host international events, a growing segment of the country's tourism portfolio.

Rebuilding with Purpose

These appointments come at a time of great momentum for Sri Lanka's tourism sector, which has seen visitor numbers steadily rise and global accolades continue to flow in. With these leadership changes, the government is signalling its commitment to sustainable development, innovative promotion, and strengthening the infrastructure needed to support the influx of global travellers.

By uniting deep local knowledge with global industry insight, the new chairmen aim to steer Sri Lanka’s tourism toward long-term success, benefiting communities, businesses, and visitors alike.

Looking Forward

As Sri Lanka continues to rise as a top-tier destination, the leadership of professionals like Hewawasam and Hettiarachchi will be critical in ensuring that the growth is meaningful, inclusive, and impactful. Their combined vision promises to uphold the island’s unique charm while building a resilient and forward-thinking tourism industry.
