This December, Melbourne’s Regent Theatre will host the Australian premiere of the Broadway sensation Anastasia. The production will then travel to Perth and Sydney in 2026, enchanting audiences across the nation with its sweeping romance, rich storytelling, and spectacular staging.

From Imperial Russia to the Streets of Paris

Anastasia is inspired by the legend of Grand Duchess Anastasia Romanov’s rumored escape during the Russian Revolution and the beloved 20th Century Fox animated film. It follows the journey of Anya, a courageous young woman determined to uncover the secrets of her past. With the help of a charming conman and a kind-hearted ex-aristocrat, she embarks on a thrilling adventure from the grandeur of Imperial Russia to the glamour of 1920s Paris, all while evading an officer intent on stopping her.

The musical has been brought to life by a Tony Award-winning creative team, including director Darko Tresnjak, writer Terrence McNally, and the celebrated songwriting duo Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens. With its soaring score featuring beloved songs from the 1997 animated film such as Journey to the Past and Once Upon a December, the show captures the romance, intrigue, and wonder of the timeless story.

Since premiering on Broadway in 2017, Anastasia has played to sold-out audiences for three years, toured North America, and enjoyed acclaimed productions in Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Brazil, Mexico, and Japan. Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, hailed as one of Broadway’s greatest songwriting partnerships, have created a lush, memorable score for Anastasia.
