The Beginning of a Sydney Retail Icon

In 1894, Thomas Nock and Herbert Kirby established a business that would become one of Sydney’s most recognisable retail names – Nock & Kirby. The two businessmen took over Felton & Nock, an ironmongery firm based at Circular Quay, and soon expanded into new premises at 194 George Street. By November 1906, Nock & Kirby had grown strong enough to become a limited liability company, setting the stage for decades of retail success.

Innovation and Expansion in George Street

In 1918, the company unveiled its striking new premises on George Street North. More than just a retail space, the building was ahead of its time, boasting a roof garden and a dining hall for staff and visitors. Known as “the store with everything,” Nock & Kirby sold an astonishing variety of goods – from pots and pans to sewing machines, clothing, building materials, and even go-karts. It quickly earned a reputation as a one-stop destination for Sydneysiders looking for quality products.

Leadership and Legacy

The business remained a family affair for decades. When Harold Nock, the eldest son of Thomas, passed away in 1925, leadership passed to his younger brother, Norman Nock. Later knighted for his contributions to Sydney, Sir Norman was instrumental in steering the company through a period of growth and change. In October 1933, Nock & Kirby opened a new store between Wynyard and Town Hall at 421–431 George Street, specialising in hardware and strengthening its position as a leader in Sydney retail.

From Stock Exchange to Household Name

By the mid-20th century, Nock & Kirby had become a household name across Sydney. In 1954–55, the company was listed on the stock exchange, a testament to its success and popularity. For generations, Sydney families relied on Nock & Kirby for everyday essentials and hard-to-find items, making it one of the city’s most trusted retailers.

The End of an Era

In 1983, a new chapter began when Burns Philp acquired Nock & Kirby stores and rebranded them as BBC Hardware. While the name disappeared from Sydney’s shopping landscape, the legacy of Nock & Kirby remains woven into the city’s retail history. Many still remember the distinctive George Street stores and the reputation for selling almost anything a household could need.
