Spice, Scenery, and Sigiriya: Discover the Heart of Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka
A Feast of Flavour and Culture

Sri Lanka is a sensory delight, bursting with colour, aroma, and energy. Known for its rich curries and warm hospitality, this teardrop-shaped island in the Indian Ocean offers more than just palm-fringed beaches. Food plays a central role in the Sri Lankan travel experience. Traditional dishes like kottu roti, made with chopped flatbread and stir-fried with vegetables and meat, are a must-try. For breakfast, nothing beats the authentic egg hopper—a bowl-shaped crepe with a perfectly cooked egg in the centre, often served with sambols and spicy condiments.

Whether you’re dining in a coastal village or grabbing a snack from a roadside stall, each bite tells a story of the country’s diverse heritage and vibrant culinary traditions.

Hop in a Tuk-Tuk and Hit the Streets

Sri Lanka
If you find yourself with a free day and a curious spirit, exploring Sri Lanka in a tuk-tuk is an adventure in itself. These buzzing three-wheelers are the local way to get around, zipping through busy streets and quiet backroads alike. Ask your driver to take you to the nearest temple, market, or beachside cafe—there’s always something to discover just around the corner.

The joy of tuk-tuk travel lies in the spontaneity. It’s a chance to see local life up close, meet new people, and experience the real rhythm of Sri Lanka.

Climb to New Heights at Sigiriya Rock

Sigiriya Rock
For the adventurous traveller, climbing the majestic Sigiriya Rock is a highlight not to be missed. This ancient rock fortress rises dramatically from the jungle and rewards those who make the 45-minute climb with panoramic views and a glimpse into Sri Lanka’s rich history. Along the way, you’ll pass ancient frescoes, lion paw carvings, and water gardens that are centuries old.

It’s a moderately challenging hike, so wear sturdy shoes and take your time. As always, know your limits, stay hydrated, and enjoy every step.

Where You Stay Matters

Accommodation in Sri Lanka can be refreshingly different from what you might be used to. Many hotels and guesthouses embrace the local charm, offering clean, comfortable, and well-presented stays. Friendly service and local touches make each stop feel special. Whether it’s a small heritage hotel in Kandy or a beachside bungalow in Mirissa, your accommodation is an important part of the experience.

We work hard to select lodgings that reflect the best of Sri Lankan hospitality—simple yet memorable, and always welcoming.

Money Tips and Travel Manners

Sri Lanka
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). While cards are accepted in many places, it’s always good to carry cash, especially for small tips or purchases in local markets. Exchange money at the airport or with your guide for convenience.

On travel days, take in the views of lush hills, tea plantations, and seaside towns. Share the good seats and start a chat with a fellow traveller—you never know what stories you’ll hear or friendships you’ll form along the way.

A Golden Crust Farewell: The Heartwarming Legacy of Robertson Pie Shop

Robertson Pie Shop
A Highlands Icon Bids Farewell

This weekend, a beloved chapter closes in the Southern Highlands. The legendary Robertson Pie Shop, a cherished stop for road trippers, holidaymakers and hungry locals, will wave goodbye to its long-time owners, Will and Jenny Bleeker. After nearly 46 years of hard work, community connection, and mouthwatering pies, the Bleeker family is stepping into a well-earned retirement.

Set on the Illawarra Highway, with views across rolling hills and sweeping countryside, the Robertson Pie Shop has become more than just a bakery—it’s a destination. For decades, the scent of fresh pastry and the welcoming faces of the Bleeker family have greeted travellers from across New South Wales and beyond.

A Family Story, Baked with Love

The story began in 1979 when Will’s parents, John and Cora Bleeker, purchased the modest roadside shop. Cora, remembered for her dedication and strength, played a central role in building the business from the ground up. John, though no longer here, remains a strong presence in the shop’s legacy.

Will and Jenny continued their family’s dream, turning the small pie shop into an essential part of the Robertson experience. With help from their children—Katie, Chloe and Peter—the shop grew, thrived and maintained a sense of home that kept customers coming back year after year.

Farewell, But Not Goodbye

Though the business has now been sold, the Bleeker touch will remain. Their son Peter will stay on to work with the new owners, helping maintain the traditions that built the shop’s reputation. There’s comfort in knowing that while change is coming, the heart of Robertson Pie Shop will still beat strong.

In a heartfelt thank you, Will and Jenny expressed their deep gratitude to their loyal customers and dedicated staff—past and present. They credit the success of the shop to the people who supported them over nearly half a century.

A Place That Felt Like Home

For many, Robertson Pie Shop was never just about the food. It was about the memories—midway stops on long drives, family picnics on the lawn, hot coffee on cold mornings. It was a place where people felt known, even if they were just passing through.

As Will and Jenny prepare for retirement, their story serves as a reminder that some of the best travel stops are the ones that offer more than just good food—they offer heart, heritage and hospitality.

New Zealand Sets the Stage for Global Business Events Growth

Tourism Minister Louise Upston with
Lisa Hopkins, BEIA CE
and Martin Snedden, BEIA
New Zealand’s business events industry received a major boost with the announcement of an additional $3 million in Government funding to attract international conferences, exhibitions, and incentive groups to the country. The announcement, made by Tourism and Hospitality Minister Hon Louise Upston, reinforces New Zealand’s ambitions to become a leading destination for high-value international business events.

The funding is part of the Government’s broader $35 million Tourism Growth Roadmap, and will support bids through Tourism New Zealand’s Conference Assistance Program over the coming year.

MEETINGS 2025 Opens with High-Level Support

Minister Upston revealed the investment during the official opening of MEETINGS 2025, New Zealand’s premier business events showcase, held at Auckland Showgrounds. The two-day event features over 250 exhibitors from 18 regions, meeting with more than 550 domestic and international buyers.

The timing of the funding could not have been more impactful. With global buyers on the ground in Auckland, the announcement demonstrated New Zealand’s readiness to compete on the international stage.

A Strategic Move with Long-Term Vision

Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) Chief Executive Lisa Hopkins welcomed the funding as a sign of long-term strategic commitment.

“This second wave of funding sends a deliberate message to the global market—New Zealand is serious about attracting world-class events and is building the infrastructure and support to do just that,”
she said.

Hopkins noted that conference and incentive visitors contribute significantly more to the economy than average tourists, spending an estimated $175 more per person per day. With many events held during off-peak travel periods, the benefits ripple through regional economies year-round.

More Than Tourism: Driving Knowledge, Trade and Innovation
MEETINGS 2025

The true value of business events, Hopkins added, goes beyond tourism dollars.

“These events bring together global thinkers, innovators, policymakers and entrepreneurs. They help build networks, attract foreign investment, and generate ideas that can shape New Zealand’s future.”

By supporting the industry through collaborative initiatives, the Government and sector aim to double tourism export earnings by 2034.

Building Momentum for the Future

With this new investment, New Zealand is well-positioned to secure more international events and unlock economic potential for cities and regions alike.

The funding also comes at a critical time, as MEETINGS 2025 energises the business events landscape and encourages new partnerships and opportunities across the country.

Caffeine Shock Abroad: Why Your Holiday Brew Could Cost More Than a Meal

New Travel Expense Brewing for Aussies

Think you've budgeted everything for your next overseas trip? Think again. While most Australian travellers plan carefully for flights, accommodation, and insurance, there’s a new cost quietly creeping into travel budgets — coffee. New research from TravelInsurance.com.au reveals that one in four Aussies have shelled out more than $10 for a single cup of coffee while abroad.

It’s not just a pricey habit — it’s what the experts are calling the “caffeine tax,” and it’s taking many holidaymakers by surprise.

A Latte to Lose: Just How Much Are We Spending?

The survey, which asked Australian travellers about their most recent overseas holiday in the past year, found that:

  • 25% paid more than $10 for one coffee

  • 15% spent up to $15

  • 7% splurged up to $20

  • 3% exceeded $20 on a single brew

With international coffee bean prices rising and foreign exchange rates often working against the Aussie dollar, travellers are finding themselves paying steep prices in tourist hotspots.

Millennials Brew Big While Boomers Hold Back

Age also plays a significant role in travel coffee spending. Millennials top the list, with 65% admitting to paying more than $10 for coffee while overseas. Gen Z follows closely behind at 63%. Meanwhile, Gen X and Baby Boomers are more conservative, with only 43% and 36% respectively indulging in luxury-priced lattes.

Interestingly, 19% of Australians say they skip coffee altogether when travelling — a savvy (or caffeine-free) way to avoid the shock.

Where in the World Is Coffee the Costliest?

If you're planning to travel soon and can't function without your daily flat white, be warned — these five destinations were named as the most expensive places to grab a coffee:

  1. London

  2. New Zealand

  3. Singapore

  4. Los Angeles

  5. Bali/Indonesia

Whether it’s sipping oat milk cappuccinos in Shoreditch or grabbing a quick espresso in Seminyak, Aussie travellers are increasingly finding their caffeine cravings come with a price tag.

Keep the Brew, Skip the Burn

TravelInsurance.com.au CEO Shaun McGowan notes that while the global price of coffee beans is partly to blame, tourist pricing and exchange rates are compounding the hit. However, not all hope (or beans) is lost. According to the same survey, 32% of Aussies have never paid more than $10 for coffee abroad — proving it’s still possible to stay under budget if you plan ahead and avoid obvious tourist traps.

Plan Your Brew Budget Before You Board

If you’re a traveller who can’t start the day without a shot of espresso, it might be time to include “daily coffee cost” in your itinerary planning. Look for local cafés off the beaten path and consider swapping your daily barista brew for hotel or apartment coffee a few times during your stay.

Thailand Welcomes 2,500 Infinitus Delegates for a Landmark Incentive Visit from China

Landmark Incentive Visit from China
A Powerful Partnership Between Thailand and Infinitus

In a significant boost for Thailand’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has successfully hosted a delegation of more than 2,500 Infinitus delegates from China. This prestigious incentive group, arriving in three waves between 12 and 19 May 2025, marks a continued strengthening of the partnership between Thailand and Infinitus, one of China’s leading health brands. The visit not only reinforces Thailand’s status as a prime destination for large-scale incentive travel but also underscores the country's appeal to high-value Chinese tourists.

Exploring Thailand’s Regional Gems

The incentive trip was meticulously planned to showcase Thailand’s diverse regional offerings. Divided into three groups, the delegates followed distinct travel routes: Phuket–Bangkok, Chiang Mai–Bangkok, and Pattaya–Rayong–Bangkok. Each route offered an enriching experience, allowing participants to explore some of the country’s most beloved cities and their surrounding regions before gathering in Bangkok for the main event.

The regional tours provided a perfect blend of culture, nature, and leisure, giving delegates the opportunity to experience Thailand's varied landscapes, local cuisine, and traditional hospitality. The highlight of the trip culminated in a large-scale seminar and gala event at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center (QSNCC) in Bangkok on 17 May 2025.

Celebrating Thai Culture and Warm Hospitality

The gala event was an embodiment of Thailand’s hospitality and cultural richness. Presided over by Mr. Kittipong Prapattong, TAT Deputy Governor for Digitalisation, Research and Development, the evening was a celebration not only of Infinitus’ long-standing partnership with Thailand but also of the country’s ability to host prestigious international gatherings. A spectacular traditional Thai cultural performance added a memorable local touch to the proceedings, leaving the guests with a lasting impression of Thailand’s unique identity.

TAT also produced a special welcome video to express gratitude to Infinitus for choosing Thailand as their incentive travel destination for over a decade. This personal touch highlighted the strength of the partnership between the two parties and emphasized Thailand’s continued position as a top destination for high-end incentive groups from China.

A VIP Welcome for Infinitus Delegates

The visit kicked off with a VIP welcome at Suvarnabhumi Airport on 13 May 2025. The group, arriving on a China Southern Airlines flight from Guangzhou, was warmly received by Mr. Chuwit Sirivejkul, TAT’s Regional Director for East Asia, along with key representatives from Guangzhou Huiyue International Travel Service. This gesture set the tone for the entire visit, reinforcing the message of Thailand’s commitment to excellence in service and hospitality for international visitors.

A Strategic Move to Attract High-Value Chinese Tourists

This visit is part of TAT’s broader strategy to position Thailand as the premier destination for large-scale incentive travel from China. Infinitus, founded in 1992, is a leading Chinese health brand specializing in herbal supplements. The company has long been known for rewarding its top-performing employees with international trips, and its continued loyalty to Thailand highlights the country’s strength as an incentive destination.

The success of this visit, which follows a similar event in 2024 that attracted over 3,000 delegates, paves the way for more large corporate groups from China to visit in 2025. This influx of high-value visitors is expected to have a significant impact on Thailand’s tourism industry, contributing to the broader goal of achieving sustainable growth in the MICE sector.

Looking Ahead: Strengthening Thailand’s MICE Industry

With this successful incentive visit, Thailand is well on its way to becoming Asia’s top MICE destination. The continued partnership with Infinitus, combined with TAT’s strategic approach to targeting high-quality tourism from China, will undoubtedly yield more large-scale corporate visits throughout 2025. As Thailand strengthens its position as a hub for global incentive travel, more exciting opportunities for local businesses, cultural exchanges, and international collaboration will unfold.

Unearthing the Past: Discover the Timeless Ruins of Dholavira

Dholavira
Walk Through One of the World’s Oldest Civilisations

Hidden amid the stark beauty of the Great Rann of Kutch in India lies one of the most extraordinary archaeological sites in the world—Dholavira, a 4,500-year-old city of the Indus Valley Civilization. Now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this ancient metropolis offers travellers a rare chance to step back into a time when urban planning, water conservation, and cultural sophistication were already thriving.

Walking through the ruins of Dholavira is not just a journey through history—it's an immersion into the brilliance of one of humanity’s earliest city-builders.

A City Carved in Stone and Ingenuity

Unlike many ruins that leave more questions than answers, Dholavira reveals astonishing details about life during the Indus Valley era. The site showcases a meticulously planned city layout with a fortified citadel, middle town, and lower town—each with distinct functions.

What makes Dholavira stand out is its remarkable water management system, considered one of the most advanced of the ancient world. Reservoirs, stepwells, channels, and stone-built drains reflect an innovative spirit that valued sustainability and urban resilience long before modern times.

Cultural Riches and Mysterious Scripts

Among the artefacts found at Dholavira are seals, beads, pottery, and ornaments, which suggest that the city was a centre for trade, art, and cultural exchange. One of the most intriguing discoveries is a large inscription made of white stone, written in the Indus script—still undeciphered today. These symbols are among the earliest known forms of writing in South Asia, adding an air of mystery to the site’s legacy.

Visitors can walk along what remains of ceremonial paths and market areas, where the rhythms of daily life once echoed between stone walls. It’s a place where imagination meets evidence, inviting you to envision the rituals, markets, and conversations of a city long gone but never forgotten.

The Journey to Dholavira

Getting to Dholavira is part of the adventure. The site is located on Khadir Island, surrounded by salt plains and a hauntingly beautiful desert landscape. Travellers can base themselves in Bhuj, Gujarat, which is well-connected by rail and air, before embarking on a scenic drive to the ruins.

While the site remains relatively off the beaten path, efforts by the Archaeological Survey of India and UNESCO have helped bring attention to this heritage treasure. Interpretive signboards and guided tours enhance the experience for those seeking a deeper understanding of the site’s historical and cultural significance.

Why Dholavira Belongs on Your Travel List

Dholavira isn’t just for history buffs. It’s for anyone who’s ever wondered how humans lived thousands of years ago—and how their innovations still influence the world we live in. As you walk through its gates, view ancient reservoirs, and marvel at the craftsmanship, you’ll feel a connection not just to the past, but to the shared story of human civilization.

Anne Being Frank – A Powerful New Voice Echoes at the Sydney Opera House

Anne Being Frank
On June 12, Anne Frank would have turned 96. Instead of growing old, her life was tragically cut short at the age of 15. Her story became one of the most enduring testimonies of the Holocaust. But this September, a new stage production dares to imagine the life she might have lived — not as a symbol of tragedy, but as a woman with strength, humour, and a fierce literary voice.

A Daring and Imaginative Retelling

Premiering at the Sydney Opera House from 13–21 September, Anne Being Frank invites audiences into an extraordinary reimagining of Anne Frank’s life. Written by award-winning playwright Ron Elisha and starring Alexis Fishman in a commanding solo performance, this internationally acclaimed production moves beyond the attic and into the uncharted territory of what might have been.

The play is set across three distinct timelines — Anne's time in hiding, her experience in the concentration camps, and a speculative future where she survives and lives to become a published author. It’s a bold exploration of identity, memory, and the lost potential of a girl who might have become one of the great literary voices of our time.

Critically Acclaimed Around the World

Following successful seasons Off-Broadway and across the United States, Anne Being Frank has garnered widespread praise and multiple accolades, including Best Solo Performance and Best Production of a Play at the Broadway World Awards.

Reviews have described the production as passionate, poignant and courageous. Front Row Center hailed it as a heart-breaking triumph, while Stage & Cinema called it “bold and imaginative.” Critics and audiences alike have been deeply moved by Fishman’s transformative performance, which gives Anne’s voice both weight and wonder.

More Than a Symbol

What sets Anne Being Frank apart is its refusal to leave Anne frozen in time. Instead, the play gives her a chance to evolve — to become the woman she never had the chance to be. Through humour, sharp commentary, and poetic honesty, the show reframes Anne as a complex and unflinching figure whose story is not defined only by loss, but also by what could have been.

A Limited Season at a Landmark Venue

Anne Being Frank
This unmissable production will play for one week only at the Sydney Opera House. With its stunning solo performance and thought-provoking script, Anne Being Frank promises to be one of the most powerful theatrical events of the year.

Tickets are now on sale, and demand is expected to be high. This is your chance to honour Anne’s memory by hearing a voice that continues to inspire across generations.

From Refund to Runway: Where Aussies Are Jetting Off with Their Tax Returns

A Mid-Year Travel Boom Fueled by Tax Time

As the end of the financial year wraps up in Australia, a new trend is emerging—not in shopping centres or savings accounts, but in departure lounges. A new survey from TravelInsurance.com.au reveals that more than half of Australians (56%) are choosing to spend all or part of their FY 2025 tax refund on overseas travel. Rather than splurging on gadgets or paying off bills, many Aussies are seeing their refund as the golden ticket to a mid-year adventure.

Japan and Europe: The Clear Favourites

Leading the charge are two timeless favourites: Japan and Europe. With their irresistible blend of culture, cuisine, and history, both destinations offer excellent value during the quieter months of late summer and early autumn. Japan remains a top pick for its blend of tradition and modernity—from Tokyo’s neon streets to the tranquillity of Kyoto’s temples.

Europe continues to captivate travellers with its diverse offerings. Whether it's cruising through the Greek Islands, enjoying vineyard tours in France, or wandering cobblestone streets in Prague, the continent promises endless possibilities for tax-refund travellers.

Other Hot Picks: NZ, Bali and Thailand

Rounding out the top five are New Zealand, Bali (Indonesia), and Thailand. These destinations remain popular for their proximity, affordability, and unique charm. New Zealand offers rugged natural beauty just a short flight from home, while Bali and Thailand deliver a mix of relaxation and adventure, from spa retreats to cultural temples and tropical beaches.

With favourable exchange rates and established tourist infrastructure, these locations offer travellers great value for every tax-refund dollar.

Spending Smart: Experiences Over Expenses

Interestingly, most Aussie travellers aren’t using their refunds to cover big-ticket items like flights or hotels. According to TravelInsurance.com.au CEO Shaun McGowan, the majority have already budgeted for the essentials. Instead, the tax return is being used to enhance the trip—paying for guided tours, culinary experiences, and local attractions that turn a good holiday into a great one.

Where Aussies Aren’t Going

While destinations like Japan and Europe are trending, others didn’t fare so well. The United States, South America, the United Arab Emirates, and Africa were among the least likely destinations for Aussie travellers planning to use their tax return. High airfares, long travel times, and economic factors may be influencing these results.

Domestic and Cruise Options Still on the Radar

Although international destinations dominate the list, 8% of Australians say they’ll travel within the country using their tax refund. Another 6% are setting sail on cruises, taking advantage of deals and all-inclusive packages. However, 30% of Australians reported that they won’t be spending their refund on travel at all, opting instead to save or redirect it elsewhere.

As July approaches and refunds begin to land, one thing is clear: for many Australians, tax time means takeoff.
