The Pagoda in the Clouds: Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo Celebrates 100 Years of a Historic Landmark

The Pagoda in the Clouds
Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo is set to unveil a new garden feature, The Pagoda in the Clouds, on Wednesday, January 8, 2025. This limited-time attraction commemorates the 100th anniversary of the relocation of the Three-Story Pagoda, a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property. Originally built in the 12th century, the pagoda was relocated from Chikurinji Temple in Hiroshima to Tokyo in 1925, where it has become a beloved symbol of the hotel’s storied gardens.

A Landmark Elevated by Nature

The Pagoda in the Clouds builds upon the hotel’s existing Tokyo Sea of Clouds display, expanding the mesmerizing cloud effect to envelop the pagoda and its surrounding garden areas. This ethereal scene evokes the pagoda’s original mountaintop setting, offering visitors a striking visual experience that highlights its historical and cultural significance.

As winter transitions to spring, another seasonal highlight will transform the gardens: cherry blossoms. With 100 cherry blossom trees across 20 varieties, including the iconic Somei Yoshino, the garden will burst into bloom from mid- to late March. The trees flower sequentially, allowing guests to enjoy a prolonged display of springtime beauty.

An Unforgettable Seasonal Experience

The combination of The Pagoda in the Clouds and the cherry blossoms is expected to attract both cultural enthusiasts and nature lovers. To further enhance the experience, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo’s restaurants will serve cherry blossom-themed dishes, and its banquet hall will host special seasonal buffets.

“The 100th anniversary of the Three-Story Pagoda offers an opportunity to reflect on its history and its continued significance to our garden and Tokyo as a whole,” said Tomohiko Chihiro, General Manager of Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo. “During cherry blossom season, we encourage guests to take in the balanced blend of the Three-Story Pagoda, the Tokyo Sea of Clouds, and the soft hues of the blossoms. The pink petals contrast beautifully against the white sea of clouds, making for an even more alluring display.”

A Legacy of Hospitality and Beauty

Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo is renowned for blending luxury with natural beauty. Its gardens, spanning 16 acres, feature a year-round spectacle of flora, including over 1,000 camellia trees. The Tokyo Sea of Clouds, a standout feature, recreates a natural phenomenon typically found in Japan’s mountainous regions. This innovation, coupled with the historic Three-Story Pagoda, makes the hotel a premier destination for those seeking tranquility and cultural enrichment.

With 265 guest rooms and suites, nine dining establishments, a full-service spa with an authentic Japanese onsen, and 38 banquet and meeting rooms, Hotel Chinzanso Tokyo caters to discerning travelers seeking a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
