Yanagawa City has many famous eel restaurants

A delicious variation of the popular “unaju” (grilled eel with rice) is a specialty from Yanagawa City in Fukuoka, called “unagi seiro mushi” (steamed eel).

This popular local dish consists of grilled eel over rice, topped with strips of fried egg and then covered in savoury sauce before being steamed in a bamboo steamer.

Served piping hot, you can really appreciate the eel’s flavours infused into the rice from the steaming.

Yanagawa City has many famous eel restaurants, each with their own traditional recipes for their “unagi seiro mushi”.
