Launch of Vintage Travel Kat Blog by Former Travel Magazine Editor

Katrina Holden, former travel magazine editor, has launched her new blog this week titled Vintage Travel Kat. The blog is devoted to vintage-related travel, lifestyle and fashion for a growing number of people who appreciate the nostalgia of the past and a sustainable way of life.

Sydney-based Katrina has been a lover of all things vintage and retro for more than three decades. Now, she is combining her passion for retro and history with her journalistic and storytelling skills and experience as an editor. Vintage Travel Kat will offer like-minded travellers and fashionistas a guilt-free hub to indulge their penchant towards vintage and stories of the past, within a modern context.

Conceived before the global Covid-19 pandemic, the timing and findings of the past few months has revealed some interesting trends that point to a growing consumer interest in the past.

“During the first week of the pandemic lockdown, sales of board games and jigsaw puzzles soared by 240 per cent in the UK alone, according to The Guardian – and similar spikes were seen all over the world,” says Katrina. “Restrictions to global travel has seen the return of the humble 'road trip' of the past, causing stirs of childhood memories and increasing refurbishments of hotels and motels. Further, grave concerns over damage to our environment and taking responsibility for our own carbon footprint, something that came dramatically to the fore after the horrendous bushfires of late 2019 and early 2020, has meant that never before has the 'reduce, reuse, recycle' mantra been stronger.”

Vintage Travel Kat will be covering content related to vintage-related travel; bars, restaurants and food; hotels with a rich heritage and modern hotels that give a nod to the past; and lifestyle content such as vintage board games, fashion, movies, exhibitions and events. Throughout, readers are invited to 'travel back through time' to bygone eras.

Katrina has worked in media and publishing for more than 20 years. She is the former editor of Australia's Vacations & Travel magazine, Luxury Travel magazine, Drinks magazine and National Liquor News – and as a freelance writer and editor has contributed to such publications as The Australian, Travel + Leisure Asia, Delicious. and Wine Companion. In addition to Vintage Travel Kat, Katrina continues to operate as a freelance editor and content creator, working with tourism boards, content agencies and magazines. She has a post-graduate degree in Journalism from UTS Sydney and a Bachelor of Arts from Macquarie University.

By the end of 2020, Vintage Travel Kat will also be launching an online vintage clothing store, selling quality and designer vintage women's fashion, jewellery and accessories from the 1950s, 60s, 70s and 80s – all curated by Katrina.

“There is a distinct move away from fast fashion, particularly by millennials and Generation Z, due to the damage that fast fashion's production processes cause to our planet. In a report released in 2019 by US resale clothing retailer thredUP, the total second-hand market is projected to grow to almost twice the size of fast fashion by 2029. The survey also revealed that in 2019, resale grew 25 times faster than the broader retail sector, with consumers now feeling proud to shop second-hand. I am really looking forward to launching my vintage online store later in the year and help share inspiration of ways to incorporate vintage items into modern living,” said Katrina.
