Today the Australian War Memorial launched the second in its On Closer Inspection series of interactive digital experiences, giving visitors a new way to explore the large technology objects in the Memorial’s collection.

Through the use of 360-degree digital video and virtual reality technology, users can view and explore a Bushmaster Protected Mobility Vehicle.

Assistant Director, Branch Head Public Programs, Anne Bennie, said the power of these digital experiences is the stories they enable us to share with wider and more diverse audiences online.

“The On Closer Inspection series of interactive digital experiences allow the public to view our large technology objects inside and out, giving them unprecedented access to the iconic Bushmaster,” Ms Bennie said.

“Pop-up icons allow the user to look at photos, watch videos, hear audio recordings, and uncover the stories behind the vehicle and the role it played in Afghanistan.

“The Bushmaster is loved and trusted by the troops who have served in it, and it will be on display in the years to come within the Memorial’s redeveloped gallery spaces.

“The Bushmaster is important to the story of Australia’s involvement in contemporary conflicts around the world and this interactive digital experience allows the Memorial to share that story on behalf of veterans,” Ms Bennie said.

On Closer Inspection is available on just about any digital device. Two versions have been created to make the experience accessible to as many Australians at possible: one using React 360 VR technology, and one for YouTube 360. A downloadable VR app that can be used to view the On Closer Inspection series on smartphones (with or without a VR headset) will be released in coming weeks.

Launching as part of the Public Sector Innovation Network conference held by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, the event is a great opportunity to introduce the government sector and the broader public to new and innovative ways of exploring our history.

The On Closer Inspection series is being delivered in partnership with Leidos Australia. Over the next 12 months the Memorial will deliver three more 360-degree immersive experiences:
The Avro Lancaster B1 ‘‘G for George” from the Second World War
HMAS Sydney (IV), deployed in the First Gulf War
A Lockheed Hudson bomber from the Second World War
