Organized group tours continue to be popular with Chinese travellers, but more are indicating that only a part of their trip, rather than their whole trip, was part of a group tour.
Canada welcomed a record 737,000 Chinese tourists in 2018, surpassing the 700K mark for the first time and doubling the number of annual travellers since 2013, with an average annual growth rate of 16%.
China was Canada's largest source of tourist arrivals from the Asia-Pacific region and Destination Canada’s second largest long-haul market, and largest for spend, in 2018. Travelling mostly during the peak travel months of July and August, they also report high interest in visiting in the fall. Chinese tourists spend on average about $2,850 per trip to Canada, staying for around 30 nights.
Seeing natural attractions like mountains or waterfalls, trying local food and drink, exploring Indigenous culture, hiking or walking in nature and viewing wildlife represent some of the top activities that Chinese leisure travellers want to do while on holiday.
78% of Chinese leisure trips to Canada continue to be booked as part of an organized group travel package, with more than half of these being done online via a travel agent or tour operator.
May 2019 saw a decline in overnight arrivals from China, leading to a slight drop in year-to-date arrivals (229K, -1%). However, China continues to be Destination Canada's second largest long-haul market and of strategic importance.
