Use of travel agents/tour operators among Australian travellers for planning or booking their recent visit to Canada is holding strong, despite a general decline. This highlights the continued importance of travel trade for travellers to Canada.
Canada welcomed 349,000 visitors from Australia in 2018, just short of the record arrivals peak in 2017. Direct air arrivals continued to grow (+6% over 2017), supported by expanded air capacity (+12%) resulting from new direct Air Canada flights between Melbourne and Vancouver.
Australian travellers typically travel to Canada between May and August, but report high interest in visiting Canada between July and October.
Australian tourists spend on average just over $2,400 per trip, staying for an estimated 18 nights on average. Top activities Australian leisure travellers want to do while on holiday include sampling local food and drink, immersing themselves in nature, seeing sites of historical significance and visiting city-based attractions such as city green spaces, art galleries and museums.
One in four Australians visiting Canada on their most recent long-haul leisure trip booked an organized group travel package via a travel agent or tour operator in-person.
Overnight arrivals from Australia increased in May to 40K (+5%) and YTD to 112K (+5%), setting new records. More travellers flew directly to Canada (+11%) over the first 5 months while fewer (-4%) flew via US.
