Exhibition Information
Walt Disney's The Jungle Book inspired Deja to become an animator when he was 13 years old in Germany. He wrote the Walt Disney Animation Studios a letter to inquire about the application process, and The Studios' response encouraged him to continue his studies. At 20 he was accepted into The Studios and he worked on early character design and animation projects for The Black Cauldron (1985), The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and more. Deja oversaw the animation for King Triton in The Little Mermaid (1989) before working on a series of memorable villains, including Gaston from Beauty and the Beast (1991), Jafar (Aladdin, 1992), and Scar (The Lion King, 1994).Deja also worked on Mickey Mouse in Runaway Brain (1996), nominated for the Best Animated Short Oscar® Hercules (Hercules, 1997), Lilo (Lilo & Stitch, 2002), and Goofy (How to Hook Up Your Home Theatre, 2007).
In addition to his work for the Walt Disney Studios, Deja is known for independent projects, including the upcoming short film Mushka. Featuring a young girl and her tiger in "a story of love and sacrifice set in Russia," the film is animated in a colored pencil style. Art from Mushka is showcased in this exhibition.
