Faster Entry for Foreign Visitors to Shanghai

Foreign passengers are enjoying a much shorter entry clearance processing time at Shanghai’s port of entry. The city is using a new sticker inside visitors’ passports as temporary entry permits for foreigners to enjoy a 144-hour visa-free transit policy.

Under the new regulation, the inspectors paste stickers on blank pages of passengers’ passports when they arrive and stamp an exit seal when they depart.

The stickers will be printed automatically with a QR code containing all the information of the passenger, which makes it more convenient for local hotels and travel agencies to identify a foreign traveler’s information.

The stickers are specially designed with anti-counterfeiting measures to improve security. Immigration inspectors currently stamp the entry seal on the passengers’ passports and hand write the dates of entry.

Beyond Shanghai, airports in Nanjing and Hangzhou also will be following this improved process.
